Tiktok faces another deadline for sale on Saturday, and unless an American buyer intervenes – or President Donald Trump again extends the deadline – the application could disappear for American users. If the prohibition comes into force, Tiktok would not be the only application to disappear: the sister application of Tiktok, Lemon8, could be taken in the cross fire.
Find out more: A VPN alone will probably not bypass Tiktok prohibitions. Here is why
Lemon8 belongs to Bytedance, the same parent company which has Tiktok. It is one of the best lifestyle applications in Apple App StoreAnd it has more than 10 million downloads in the Google Play Store.
“Lemon8 is an application focused on the lifestyle community powered by Tiktok, where you can discover and share authentic content on a variety of subjects such as beauty, fashion, travel, food, etc.”, indicates the description of the application in the two stores.
Here’s what you need to know about Lemon8.
Note: I contacted Bytedance for this story, and the company did not respond to comment.
What is lemon8?
Lemon8 messages can contain text to help label objects in the post.
Lemon8 is a video sharing platform and photo that avoids Tiktok’s vertical scrolling format in favor of a Pinterest style format. But what Lemon8 and Tiktok have in common is that the two have followed and to make you publications of creators that you follow and publish the application thinks that you will like.
The content of Lemon8 is divided into six subject tabs, plus a seventh tab called All. The other tabs are Fashion,, Beauty,, Food,, Well-being,, Journey And Home. These tabs can be found at the top of your screen, and a tasage in these tabs shows that you have recommended and suggested messages.
Messages can be gliding photo collections like in Instagram or Tiktok style videos. Some creators add text to their photos to label clothes or a product. Some will also include the price of the article in the text.
How is Lemon8 different from Tiktok and other applications?
Lemon8 is different from other applications in terms of what is displayed and the way it is presented.
Lemon8 has many influencer advertisements and product recommendations. It is difficult to say what is and is not sponsored content, and this seems to be the norm through the application. Tiktok also has sponsored content, but generally these are marked as such in the lower left corner.
The memes do not seem to catch up in Lemon8.
There are also not many memes or jokes on lemon8 compared to other applications. You can find memes on Lemon8, but various hashtags associated with “memes”, such as “Funnymemes” and “Catmemes”, have less than a million views (as opposed to hundreds of millions on Instagram). This could be due to the fact that Lemon8 still catches up in the United States, but my suspicion is Lemon8 is not intended for the same. It is supposed to be more a guide to help you reach a certain lifestyle or an aesthetic.
There is also a lot of writing in Lemon8. For example, post legends may include instructions for a deeper recipe or ventilation of an outfit. Tiktok legends can have useful information, but these legends consist more of connecting publications to the hashtags to obtain more views and not necessarily adding new information to the Post Tiktok. Lemon8 uses legends in a manner similar to Instagram publications, but lemon8 legends have a key difference compared to Instagram: models.
Lemon8 models can help you create quickly or give yourself an idea of what to include legends.
Lemon8 allows you to use models for your messages to help you format quickly and give you an idea of what your message generates. There are model legendary models, shopping finds, beauty, food and travel.
Lemon8 reminds me of a mashup between magazines Martha Stewart Living,, Muscle and fitness And Voyage + Leisure. You can find useful tips in Lemon8 to help you make a desired aesthetic or find a vacation inspiration, but it is not clear what is and is not an ad.
What do the people of Lemon8 say?
The reaction of people in Lemon8 is apparently positive so far. A creator of Tiktok published a video Call lemon8 “Pinterest, but interactive”. Another said lemon8 is a combination of Pinterest, Instagram and Tiktok.
However, this positivity could be artificially inflated. ZDNET reports that many Tiktok publications on Lemon8 have described the application with a similar language, making believe that Bytedance paid for these creators.
And certain claims of lemon8 creators make this theory more viable. A lemon designer8 said Initiated This Bytedance paid them to publish on the application. Two other lemon8 creators have shown initiate emails that describe the application payment structure.
Who owns Lemon8?
Bytedance, the Chinese technology company owner of Tiktok, also has Lemon8. According to ZdnetBytedance positions Lemon8 to be an Instagram rival because more and more users cease to use or abandon the META application.
According to the Wall Street JournalAn internal note from Meta has shown that Instagram engagement was down. Bytedance leaders could hope to capitalize by giving Instagram users an alternative application in the form of lemon8. And while Lemon8 was released worldwide in 2020, the recent growth in the application could show that Bytedance game is paying.
Will Lemon8 be banished alongside Tiktok?
Since Lemon8 belongs to Bytedance, which also owns Tiktok, the application may be prohibited alongside Tiktok on April 5.
The law requiring the sale of Tiktok could be generally applied to other applications held and operated by Bytedance and its subsidiaries. When Tiktok closed operations in the United States in January, Lemon8 was arrested alongside the application. If Tiktok stops again, Lemon8 will probably be too.
Should you download Lemon8?
Even with an imminent closure, Lemon8 is free, you can therefore download and try the application now before the sales deadline. Just know that the articles of the application resemble educational guides more than memes to share, and many messages look like advertisements.
What is Lemon8’s privacy policy?
The Lemon8 Voyage tab can inspire you for your next getaway.
Most lemon8 Privacy Policy Seems standard for social media applications. He indicates that Lemon8 collects personal and location information to provide you with a better application experience. Certain information collected includes your IP address and your navigation history. But part of the application privacy policy could raise eyebrows.
“The personal information we collect can be stored on a server located outside the country where you live,” said policy. The company has servers around the world, according to politics, so that your information can be stored in one of them.
This is different from how the Lemon8 Tiktok sister application stores some users’ data. The company stores user data based on the United States in Oracle servers. The CEO of Tiktok, Shou Chew, said that Bytedance employees in China can access this data, but with “robust cybersecurity checks and an approval of the authorization” supervised by a security team based in the United States.
