Pope Francis appeared at the hospital window in Rome for the first time since his admitted on February 14.
The 88 -year -old pontiff was released a few minutes later and doctors say he will need at least two months of rest at the Vatican.
In the past five weeks, he has presented “two very critical episodes” where his “life was in danger,” said Dr. Sergio Alfieri, one of the doctors who treats the pope.
Pope Francis has never been intubated and has always remained alert and oriented, said Dr. Alfieri. The pope is not completely healed, but has no pneumonia anymore and is now in a stable state, according to his doctors.
The Pope will offer a blessing from his window to Gemelli Hospital on Sunday – the first time he will appear in public since he was admitted to the hospital – before returning to his residence at the Vatican.
Dr. Alfieri said that patients with double pneumonia lose their voice and “especially in the elderly, it will take time for your voice to return to normal”.
On Friday, Cardinal Victor Fernandez said that “dry -flow oxygen everything” and, therefore, the Pope “must relearn how to speak,” Reuters reported.
If the improvement trend continues, said doctors, the Pope could return to work as soon as possible.

The Vatican said on Friday that the Pope had experienced some improvements in his breathing and mobility.
He had confirmed that he no longer used mechanical ventilation to breathe at night, but that he received oxygen rather via a small tube under his nose. During the day, it uses less oxygen with high flow.
The pope has only been seen by the public since he was admitted to the hospital, in a photograph published by the Vatican last week, which showed him pray in a hospital chapel.
Earlier this month, an audio recording of Pope Francis speaking in his native Spaniard was played on Saint-Pierre square in the city of the Vatican.
His voice was breathless as he thanked the Catholic faithful for their prayers.
Pope Francis spent 12 years as head of the Roman Catholic Church.
He has undergone a number of health problems throughout his life, in particular by being part of one of his lungs removed at 21, which makes him more subject to infections.
