A man from Jacksonville, Florida, is behind bars after a devastating incident that resulted in the death of an 8 month old baby on the morning of Saturday, January 25.
Justin Golden20 years, was arrested shortly after the shocking event, which saw the infant placed on a road before being struck by a SUV that Golden led, police said. The baby did not survive.
The Jacksonville sheriff’s office confirmed that Golden had been placed in police custody and is now faced with accusations of guilty manslaughter and vehicle homicide.
Disturbing details emerge
The authorities revealed in a press release that Golden had traveled with a temporary woman and the infant when an animated argument broke out between the two adults.
“By stopping at the intersection, the driver opened his door and placed the child on the road. He then left, making the child leaving the area, “said the sheriff’s office.
The paramedical paramedics of Jacksonville Fire Rescue responded quickly and precipitated the baby in the hospital, but despite their efforts, the medical staff pronounced the dead child, according to the local affiliate of CW WJXT.
At the time of the arrest of Golden, the investigators thought that he and the passenger were the child’s parents, but that was not officially confirmed. The authorities have not yet determined if the death of the child was intentional.
Eyewitness tells the heartbreaking scene
Markin Barnes, who has a nearby hair salon, has witnessed the consequences of the horrible incident, which occurred just after 10:30 am, he rushed outside when he heard the cries of a woman coming On the other side of the street.
“I saw her holding the baby,” said Barnes to Wjxt, recalling the moment he arrived at the scene. “The driver then started to leave the area and the vehicle hit the child, so we immediately asked for her to help.”
Barnes said he and others quickly assured the woman that an ambulance was on the way.
Later, speaking with the affiliate of NBC WTLV, Barnes explained how the tragedy weighed on him after learning more about the case. “Now that I discover the details, it’s even worse,” he admitted. “Just the cries, people consoling her, you could say it was really tragic. Especially with such a young child.
As the father of twins, Barnes said that the whole situation had deeply affected him. “It will be prayers and thoughts for the family,” he said. “It’s tough, you know, with children and young people, it will certainly be a traumatic situation.”
The community meets in the wake of the tragedy
Barnes has since opened its hair salon as a safe space for anyone in the community which may need support after having witnessed the horrible event.
Meanwhile, the authorities remain determined to ask for justice. “We, with our partners from the Office of the State Prosecutor, we will stop nothing to obtain justice for the baby,” said the sheriff’s office in his declaration.
The suspect remains in detention
Golden is currently detained in Duval County prison, according to prisoners’ files. His next appearance before the court is scheduled for February 18 at 9 a.m. while the baby’s death is continuing.
