A French court judged the far -right chief Marine Le Pen guilty of the European Union’s embezzlement.
The Paris Court judged that Le Pen used more than 3 million euros ($ 3.3 million) in European Parliament to pay the members of its National Rally. The decision threatens to repel the nationalist of the 2027 presidential race, in which she is currently the favorite, according to opinion polls.
The conviction, which should be announced immediately, could see Le Pen declared inadmissible to stand in the elections. She accused prosecutors of seeking her “political death”. A prison sentence and a strong financial penalty are also possible.
“If Marine Le Pen cannot run, it would change the landscape of the French on the far right and its prospects,” said Natacha Butler of Al Jazeera of the Paris courtroom. “Most likely, it would be Jordan Bardella to take his place, the current president of RN.
“But it is much younger and not the same kind of dominant force as Marine Le Pen,” she added. “It is not the figure that so many people in France know, and some say that he would probably find that more difficult in the 2027 race.
