Final Fantasy is one of the most successful series of games of all time, with more than 200 million copies Sold on the 16 main games and various benefits. You can therefore imagine the overhaul when Wizards of the Coast announced last fall that Magic: The Gathering – a negotiation card game that dollard $ 1 billion in income last year – published a Final Fantasy set.
At Pax East on Saturday, we had the last overview of certain cards from the Magic Final Fantasy set, which will be released next month. The Final Fantasy panel made us pass cards from each game of Final Fantasy from the main line, giving us our first looks on the protagonists like Squall of Final Fantasy 8 and 13’s Lightning, as well as glimpses of recurring characters like Chocobos and Cid. We also had our first overview of a new magic mechanic: on several levels, which allows players to pay more mana for greater effects, such as a more versatile version of the Kicker mechanic.
By paying more mana when you launch magic fire, you get better effects, similar to the magic systems of most Final Fantasy games.
Magic: The Gathering has experienced with other properties via its universe series Beyond, which has actually started with drops of limited edition cards with characters from The Walking Dead, before being officially introduced with a similar drop for strange things. Before Final Fantasy, the greatest universes beyond set were the Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth, the first universes in its own right beyond the set, released in 2023.
When the universes beyond were announced for the first time, Wizards of the Coast said that mechanically unique cards would be limited in standard game format, which generally authorizes the most recent sets of sets. The Pax panel deepened my despair for this set, but it also made me quite optimistic. In the interviews with the media before the panel, the game designers talked about the imperative they felt to do things – to design cards that seemed authentic for games and series, cards that seemed significant for fans, instead of simply building them according to commercial objectives.
