On Verizon? If you have a Google Pixel 9 or Samsung Galaxy S25 phone and you find in a cell death area, you can now send sms to your friends and family via satellite. This is the same feature that Apple has introduced for the iPhone 14 and more recent (regardless of the carrier) in iOS 18.
Although these Android phones have been able to connect to emergency services via satellite, they can now use satellite connectivity to send SMS to anyone, regardless of the recipient’s device or carrier. Verizon says that this capacity has already started to take place, but will take two weeks.
Verizon is not the only carrier focused on the supply of this type of satellite connectivity to fill the gaps in the coverage of the terrestrial cellular network. T-Mobile recently announced a partnership with Starlink who is currently in beta version until July. It allows you to send and receive SMS, and the carrier says that you can soon share photos, use data, make voice calls, etc. The T-Mobile solution will be included for subscribers on its GO5G Next plan, and other customers can add it to their existing plan for $ 15 per month. AT&T also works with AST Spacemobile and recently tested a video call on satellite connectivity.
