“One of the best things I read was an essay from 1889 by Andrew Carnegie called The Gospel of Wealth,” wrote the president of the Gates Foundation. “It argues that the rich are responsible for returning their resources to society, a radical idea at the time which laid the foundations of philanthropy as we know it today.”
