Shields, 59, recalls signing a 16-movie deal with Hallmark Network more than a decade ago in his latest memoir, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed To Age: Thoughts On Aging As A Womanwhich was published on Tuesday, January 14.
“I had only finished three when I realized I had to renegotiate. I had been hired, I was told, to help change the face of the network,” she wrote. “They wanted me to be funny and bring more comedy to their offering, but as filming progressed on each of the Mysteries of the flower shop – the franchise I was hired to run – all the humor had evaporated.
Shields starred as Abby Knight, a flower shop owner and ex-lawyer, in all three films. His first film with the network, titled It’s mom speaking: a mystery at a floristcreated in January 2016. His second, Mystery of the flower shop: nipped in the budaired in April 2016. Shields’ third and final appearance as Abby Knight was in June 2016 with Flower Shop Mystery: Dearly Depotted.
“Not everything is for everyone, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the Hallmark Channel — God knows it has a huge fan base — but it wasn’t the future I wanted for my career,” Shields wrote. “I am never against hard work, but I now believe in only saying yes to work that serves me.”

The actress explained that she could “make a living with other opportunities,” including those that allowed her to spend more time with her family. (Shields shares daughters Rowan, 21, and Grier, 18, with her husband Chris Henchy.)
“I just couldn’t make ten more films that weren’t what I was promised and that felt completely wrong,” she wrote. “So I stopped. I definitely surprised some people, and in many ways, I surprised myself. I certainly never would have done that in my 20s.
Despite the end of her partnership with the network, Shields returned years later for one of their famous holiday films. She starred in the 2021 film A castle for Christmas alongside Cary Elwes.
Much of Shields’ later memoir focuses on how his mindset changed as he aged in the public eye. The actress said it Us every week exclusively in a recent cover story, she feels “more confident” than ever as she approaches her 60th birthday.
“That doesn’t mean I’m any less ambitious. If anything, I’m probably more ambitious because I feel I deserve it more. I’m still afraid. I’m still nervous, I’m not good enough,” she shared. “I still have to push myself to get through this, [but] we become essential. We’re pretty awesome, and I think it’s a little scary for everyone.
