Aston Villa host West Ham United for the second time in January, with the claret and blue foes clashing in the Premier League on Sunday.
The sides met in the FA Cup third round in what was Graham Potter’s first game in charge of West Ham, but the former Chelsea manager was unsuccessful on his debut at Villa Park as the Irons fell to a 2-1 defeat. They will look for revenge this weekend.
West Ham will need to do their best to escape the Midlands unbeaten, meaning significant improvements are needed from last weekend’s limp defeat at home to Crystal Palace. Injuries across the forward line have posed an unwanted challenge early in Potter’s reign and he will be hoping for reinforcements this winter.
Despite their unusually lethargic defeat to Monaco in Champions League midweek, Villa have started the new year in impressive form. They won their first three matches of 2025 before coming back from two goals down at Arsenal last weekend to salvage a valuable point.
Here is 90 minutes guide to a must-see Premier League match.

Amadou Onana is doubtful this weekend after injuring his hamstring last weekend in the draw against Arsenal. The midfielder lasted just 37 minutes before being substituted and may subsequently be unavailable for the visit of West Ham.
Fellow midfielder Ross Barkley is out for Villa, but John McGinn is closing in on a return following his own hamstring injury. The Scottish international could still miss this weekend, however.
Pau Torres is still in the treatment room and Diego Carlos’ departure means Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings will once again be asked to line up in central defense.
Line-up of Aston Villa against West Ham (4-2-3-1): Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne; Kamara, Tielemans; Bailey, Rogers, Ramsey; Watkins.
West Ham are currently short on attacking options but could welcome captain Jarrod Bowen back into the squad after Graham Potter revealed he has been reinstated in training. Crysencio Summerville is also set to return, although Sunday’s clash will come too soon, but Michail Antonio and Niclas Fullkrug are absent.
Potter also needs to readjust his defense due to the suspension of Konstantinos Mavropanos, but is unlikely to be able to call on Jean-Clair Todibo.
Line-up of West Ham against Aston Villa (3-4-2-1): Fabianski; Wan-Bissaka, Kilman, Cresswell; Coufal, Alvarez, Rodriguez, Emerson; Paqueta, Soucek; Well done.
West Ham were extremely disappointing in last weekend’s defeat to Palace, totaling an XG of just 0.28 at the London Stadium. Not only did they fail to create chances, but the Hammers struggled to contain
Palace’s speed and power on the counterattack.
Villa are set to cause them similar problems on Sunday with their tricky attacking group and even the energy exerted in midweek should not stop Unai Emery’s side from securing a third win against the Irons this season.
