Troy Aikman spoke about the Cowboys head coach’s openness on Monday Night Football after the franchise opted to move on from Mike McCarthy and his assessment was brutal. He suggested that it appears there is no coherent plan from Jerry Jones because they let the incumbent go without interviewing the other candidates. The Hall of Fame quarterback mentioned some people like Kellen Moore, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn saying:
“That suggests there’s no real plan. The fact that they haven’t had a chance to interview maybe Ben Johnson and some of these others, Aaron Glenn. Kellen Moore being a candidate, It makes sense to me. He’s a guy who knows the building well. He’s obviously worked with the Cowboys, with Jerry Jones, and they know each other very well.
Troy Aikman also criticized whether the Cowboys vacancy is currently coveted. He acknowledged the high-profile nature of the franchise, but said it may not be the most attractive opening for potential head coaches. He explained this by saying that most candidates would want to do this job on their own terms and that it is difficult to do in Dallas, commenting:
•
“As far as a coveted position, I don’t know if that’s accurate. I think the Cowboys are obviously a high-level team and whoever the head coach of that team is, he’s definitely going to attract a lot of attention. be careful, but I think most footballers who take over as head coach want to do it on their terms, and that’s difficult to do.”

Cowboys HOF Troy Aikman uses Dan Campbell as example to make his point after Mike McCarthy’s firing
Troy Aikman further made his point by using the example of Dan Campbell, who had so much success as a head coach in Detroit. He said he might not be able to achieve the same results in Dallas, noting:
“If you take Dan Campbell, for example, is Dan Campbell (in Detroit) Dan Campbell if he’s with the Dallas Cowboys. It’s hard to imagine that he is. It’s hard to say ‘I imagine a lot of these coaches could be. I love the Dallas Cowboys I played there for 12 years. But to say it’s a coveted job, I’m not sure. that I would necessarily agree with that.
It was a damning indictment of the Cowboys of the current era from a man who did as much as anyone to make the franchise great.
