Three American women were found dead this weekend in a seaside resort in Belize, police announced on Monday and that officials were investigating as possible drug overdoses.
The Belize police identified women like Kaoutar Naqqad, 23 ,, Imana Mallah, 24, and Wafae El-Arar, 26, who stayed at the Royal Kahal Beach Resort. They did not publish additional details.
The city of Revere, Massachusetts, said in an article on social networks that the three women were local residents.
“The city of Revere extends our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the three local women who died tragically and unexpectedly in Belize,” said the city in a Facebook publication.
The resort’s housing staff tried to contact the women several times on Friday, after surveillance images showed them entering their room on Thursday evening and not returning, police said in a statement. After the staff received no response on Saturday morning, they used a main key to enter and the women were found motionless.
The cause of their death remained unconfirmed. The first speakers said that women were found with foam on their mouths, suggesting a possible drug overdose.
The authorities said in Belize News 5 Live This police found alcohol and gums on the scene.
“We are not saying for the moment that the gummies have caused death, but we are examining all the possibilities,” said police commissioner Chester Williams said to the exitAdding that the police investigate if the gummies were brought to Belize or bought locally.
The police have not reported any sign of forced entry or visible injuries and the police found snacks, liquids, vapes and other electronic devices in the women’s room.
The Royal Kahal is a luxury complex by the sea on Ambergris Caye, located in the city of San Pedro, in Belize, according to its website.
Police said they were still investigating.
