The Irish boxer John Cooney died a week after his Celtic-print title fight at the Ulster Hall in Belfast.
Cooney, 28, was arrested at the ninth round of his fight against Welsh Nathan Howlls on February 1 and was transported to hospital, where he underwent surgery on brain bleeding and was admitted to care intensive.
His MHD promotions promotions announced on Saturday via social media that he died.
“It is with a complete devastation that we must announce that after a week of struggle for his life, John Cooney unfortunately died,” read the post.
“M. And Mrs. Cooney and her fiancée Emmaleen would like to thank the staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast who worked tirelessly to save the life of John and for all those who sent messages of support and prayers.
“He was a very loved son, brother and partner and we will all need a life to forget how special he was. Rip John ‘The Kid Cooney’.”
Cooney won the Celtic superpum weight title with a victory in the first round on Liam Gaynor in Dublin in November 2023, which is part of the same closed window show that saw Katie Taylor defeat Chantelle Cameron by majority decision.
He spent a year off the ring with an injury in hand, but returned to defeat Tampela Maharusi in York Hall in October, before his fight last week.
