At least six people were transported to hospital after a shooting at Florida State University in Tallahassee.
On Thursday, a person was placed in police custody after the shooting of the Union Student Union building, according to CBS News, the American partner of the BBC.
President Donald Trump said he was informed of the incident at the start of a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in the White House, calling him “a damage, a horrible thing”.
Florida Governor Ron Desantis said: “Our prayers are with our FSU family and the states’ police are actively responding.”
One of the victims taken to the hospital is in critical condition, according to the Memorial health care establishment in Tallahassee, with five others in serious condition.
The university canceled all the courses until at least on Friday, and sporting events were also canceled for the weekend.
Police responded to an active shooter call around noon at local time, the university said.
He then sent an alert warning to the students and those of the campus to “look for a shelter and wait for other instructions”.
“One of my classmates obtained an alert on his phone and announced it to the rest of the class,” Ava Arenado told CBS News Miami.
A briefing is expected later Thursday.
