The meeting of the two leaders intervenes in the midst of an offensive interrupted in Gaza which, according to the Israeli army, aims to put pressure on Hamas to release the remaining hostages and, ultimately, expel the militant group.
Israel announces new corridors
Meanwhile, Israel says that he has deployed troops in a newly established safety corridor in southern Gaza. Netanyahu announced the new Morag corridor on Saturday and suggested that it would cut the southern city of Rafah, which Israel ordered the evacuation, from the rest of Gaza.
A military statement said that troops in the 36th division had been deployed in the corridor. It was not immediately clear how many people had deployed or where the corridor was exactly. Morag is the name of a Jewish colony which was once between Rafah and Khan Younis, and Netanyahu suggested that he would run between cities.
The maps published by the Israeli media showed the new corridor performing the width of the narrow coastal strip from east to west.
Netanyahu said it would be “a second Philadelphi corridor”, referring to the side of Gaza from the border with Egypt further south, which has been under Israeli control since last May.
Israel has also reaffirmed control of the Netzarim corridor which cuts the northern third of Gaza, including the city of Gaza, from the rest of the band. The corridors of Philadelphi and Netzarim range from the Israeli border to the Mediterranean Sea.
Hamas says that the situation is “very dangerous” for hostages
Hamas, which had long been designated by a terrorist organization by Israel and the United States before even leading the brutal attack on October 7, 2023 against Israel which triggered War in Gazasaid on Friday that the current Israel offensive in Gaza created a “very dangerous” situation for the hostages that are still organized there. He warned that half of the living captives were in areas where the Israeli army had ordered evacuations.
“Half of the Israelis living (hostages) are located in areas that the Israeli occupation army has asked to be evacuated in recent days,” said Abu Obeida, spokesperson for the Hamas army wing, in a statement, AFP reported. “We decided not to transfer them (hostages) … But (this situation) is very dangerous for their lives.”
Hamas says that it will only publish the 59 remaining hostages – of which 24 are supposed to be alive – in exchange for the release of more Palestinian prisoners, a lasting ceasefire and an Israeli Gaza judgment. The group rejected the requirements to lay their arms or leave the territory.
Israel has expressed radical evacuation orders for parts of the northern Gaza before the expansions expected in its ground operations. The United Nations Humanitarian Bureau said that around 280,000 Palestinians had been moved since Israel suddenly ended a cease-fire with Hamas last month that was negotiated by the United States, Egypt and Qatar.
To put pressure on Hamas, Israel has imposed A blockade of one month On food, fuel and humanitarian aid that have left civilians confronted with acute shortages as the supply decreases – a tactic which, according to defense groups, is a war crime. Israel said earlier this week that enough food had entered Gaza during a six -week truce to keep around 2 million Palestinians in the territory for a long time.
The war began when activists led by Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and taking 251 hostages, most of whom have been released in cease-fire and other agreements. Israel has saved eight living hostages and has recovered dozens of bodies.
More than 50,000 Palestinians were killed in Gaza as part of the Israel offensive, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, which does not say if those who are killed are civilians or combatants. The ministry says that more than half of the people killed were women and children. Israel says he killed around 20,000 activists, without providing evidence.
