A violin Stradivarius made the “summum” of Antonio Stradivari’s career sold at auction for a breathtaking price this week.
The musical instrument, made in 1714 by Stradivari, the most famous associate of the violin, sold $ 11.3 million during an auction Sotheby’s in New York on Friday.
The violin, known as “Joachim-Ma Stradivarius”, was made during the “golden period” of Stradivari when he was up to his acoustic control of the instrument, said Sotheby’s.
“This extraordinary violin represents the ultimate in crafts and the history of classical music, its unrivaled sound and its agitated origin captivating collectors and musicians,” said Mari-Claudia Jimenez, president of Sotheby’s. “The Joachim -M -Stradivarius drew global attention, reaching one of the highest prices ever ever disputed for a musical instrument – recognition of its rarity and its historical importance.”

The Joachim-M-Stradivarius takes its name from its two most famous owners: Joseph Joachim of Hungary, who lived in the 19th century, and Si-Hon Ma of China, whose succession gave the violin to the New England Conservatory Boston after his death in Philadelphia in 2009.
The Conservatoire plans to create a musical scholarship fund with the product.
“The sale is transformational for future students, and the product will establish the largest scholarship with the New England Conservatory,” said Andrea Kalyn, president of the New England Conservatory. “It was an honor to have the Joachim-Ma Stradivari on the campus, and we are impatient to see his heritage continue on the world scene.”

The most expensive Stradivarius violin sold $ 15.9 million in 2011. This violin was known as “Lady Blunt” and was made in 1921. He also holds the record as the most instrument Never sold, according to Voice of America.
