Sweden police said on Tuesday that at least five people had been shot dead in a school in the city of Orebro, which, according to the Associated Press, was an adult education center. Police said they had no information on the state of the victims, and they warned “the danger was not over”, as their operation continued.
The news agency TT of Sweden said, citing anonymous sources, that the shooter died of a self-inflicted ball injury at the Risbergska campus school, which, according to his website, concerns more students 20 years old. Police did not confirm the information on the shooter, but they had to give a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
“A major operation is currently underway in a Västhaga school, Orebro,” Swedish national police said in a statement Posted online, urging public members “to stay away from the Västhaga region” or, if it is not possible, to stay in their homes.
“The operation concerns threats of fatal violence,” said the police.
“The extent of the injuries is not clear,” said police, adding a reference to the accusations of “attempted murder, criminal fire and aggravated weapons offense”, but not confirming if a suspect or suspects was in detention.
Suede Firearm possession laws are strict, with “the right to have weapons, even for protective purposes”, requiring a license granted only with an explicit authorization of the police, which must be applied before any planned purchase. An authorized firearms owner must transport the document with them at any time when it is in possession of a weapon, and the law not only covers firearms, but also weapons that pull or deploy tear gas .
