It is difficult to know how to feel the potential liberation of Joel Souza’s “Rust”. It is the western produced independently which became a major news in 2021 when a revolver of .45 Colt Branda by the star Alec Baldwin – who continues to claim that he did not shoot the trigger, hence the bizarre wording here – pulled a live tour directly through the chest of filmmakers Halyna Hutchins and in the shoulder of Souza. The Armorier of the Ensemble, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was finally found guilty of manslaughter for his negligence in the loading of the weapon. Meanwhile, accusations of manslaughter against Baldwin were dismissed with prejudice by New Mexico judge Mary Marlowe Sommer.
The main photography on “Rust” was finally completed in 2023. This delay had the members of the Brady Noon and Jensen Ackles distribution abandoned (they were replaced by, respectively, Patrick Scott McDermott and Josh Hopkins), but Souza and the company dragged the film through the finish line and screened it during the film Camerime Festival on November 20 Judging the film on his own merits, because each shooting game in the film reminded them of the tragedy that killed Hutchins.
“Rust” is always looking for distribution, so we don’t know when moviegoers will have the chance to see it for themselves – if they want to see it at all. Perhaps to increase the chances of the film to obtain a theater release, a trailer was published on YouTube. What does it look like?
