Washington (AP) – The Trump administration has suspended about $ 175 million in federal funding for the University of Pennsylvania for the participation of a Transgender athlete in its swimming program, the White House said on Wednesday.
The Ivy League school faced aSurvey of the Department of EducationFocus on your swimming program. This investigation was announced last month immediately after President Donald Trump signed aexecutive decreeintended to ban transgender athletes from participating in the sports of girls and women.
But the federal money was suspended in a distinct examination of the discretionary federal money going to universities, said the White House. The money that was interrupted came from the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Health and Social Services.
A Penn spokesperson said that the school had received no notification or detail of the action.
“It is important to note, however, that Penn has always followed the policies of the NCAA and the Ivy League concerning the participation of students in the sports teams,” said spokesman Ron Ozio. “We have been in the past and we remain today, in full compliance with the regulations that apply not only to Penn, but to all our institutions by the peers of NCAA and Ivy League.”
The survey opened by the office of the Department of Education for civil rights in Penn focuses onLia ThomasWho swam in the school women’s team and was the first transgender athlete to win a Division I title in 2022.
The agency also opened criticism ofSan Jose State UniversityVolleyball and Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.
