A former Russian general was imprisoned for seven years after being accused of having taken bribes.
LT Gen Vadim Shamarin was arrested last year During a repression of corruption in the Ministry of Defense launched by the Kremlin, and was accused of having “a particularly important bridge-brown” of a telecommunications company.
The Russian Inquiry Committee said it had taken bribes worth 36 million rubles (£ 331,000) between 2019 and 2023 from a factory that produces communication equipment-and, in return, increased the size of state contracts granted to the company.
Before his arrest, he had been deputy chief of the general staff of the army supervising the body and military communications signals.
The TASS de Russia news agency quoted Shamarin’s lawyer saying: “In total, Shamarin was sentenced to seven years in a penal colony of maximum security, a ban on seven years of public service, and was stripped of its military rank.”
The court also confiscated 36 million rubles of him, reported the news agency Ria Novosti.
Shamarin was one of several personalities from the Ministry of Defense who were arrested last year, who also included the defense vice-minister Timur Ivanov and Lieutenant-General Yuri Kuznetsov, chief of the Department of Defense Staff.
He came after Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected his long -term defense minister Sergei Shoigu in May 2024.
He was replaced by Andrei Belousov, an economist with little military experience.
Experts suggested that the repression of corruption has marked an attempt by the Kremlin to stimulate the effectiveness of the Russian army.
