We are now around a third of the path through the Indian Premier League 2025, so it seems to be the right time to take stock and assess the healthy teams and which must be raised.
It’s a cliché that the bowling alley wins you from T20 trophies, but it’s true. An overview of the IPL table will also tell you that the first fronts have all made significant changes to their bowlingal attacks during the auction, changes that made them stronger.
The Gujarat Titans reached two finals in their first two years, and during the two seasons, they had an attack on a bowling in fire.
In 2023, they even had the three biggest takers in the tournament in Rashid Khan, Mohammad Shami and Mohit Sharma.
Last year, their bowling alley completely lost its advantage (the striker did it too, which did not help) and they looked like their old self.
During the auction, they decided that an overhaul was necessary and their smart purchases are already starting to bear fruit. Mohammed Siraj looked close to his best ardent, while Prasidh Krishna has shown once again than, when he is in good shape, he could be a real weapon for India in all formats.
The radiant Sai Kishore brought the turnover to such an extent that it was not even noticed that Rashid was completely ineffective. If he also strikes, they will participate in the play-offs.
Delhi’s capital was the worst bowling of the tournament last year, and they had to sign a declaration in the department of rapid denigration.
For any reason, Kolkata Knight Riders let Mitchell Starc leave (a bizarre decision), and the capital plunged up.
Four games and he has already made a huge difference, picking up the first counters to get Delhi before the match. With Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel always one of the best duos in Spin, they now have a bowlingal attack that can compete with the best shot programs.
His Australian Australian partner Josh Hazlewood had a similar impact at Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Neither he nor Starc played so much IPL cricket.
In fact, Hazlewood only played 33 games. The main reason is that they have prioritized international cricket on IPL, which helped them keep in shape and well in mid-Tentaine.
We now see what IPL has missed in recent years and how much it can offer to any team that is lucky to have them.
Gujarat, Delhi and Bangalore struggle with the striker
Gujarat, Delhi and the Royal Challengers have all improved their bowlingal attacks and, consequently, leaning in a bit of health. The three teams at the bottom of the table are mainly there because their striker has not fired.
Chennai Super Kings is the most obvious example. They lost four in a row, all the prosecution, and whenever their lack of firepower in the middle order was as clear as the day.
They count too much on Shivam Dube in the second half of the sleeves and too often ravaged Jadeja and Vijay Shankar must mark very quickly from the first ball, which does not naturally come from one or the other.
The elephant in the room is Mrs. Dhoni. His typing rate in the past two seasons has been very good, but as he has a chronic knee problem, CSK hesitates to bring it up to the last five or sometimes even later.
But at this point, it is often too late and the game was lost.
Head coach Stephen Fleming said that “Dhoni cannot beat 10 overtime during the race”, but I still think he can be brought earlier to give him time to influence a match with the bat. If CSK does not do it, it can end up being too late for their barrage chances.
So far, the big shock of the season has been the Sunrisers who have found themselves supporting the table.
After dominating the Royals in their first match, it seemed to resume where they stopped last season, but their striker suddenly worked in a major way. Their problem is not a lack of power, however – if anything, it is the opposite.
The mantra of all the first six – except Nitish Kumar Reddy – is to take out all the firearms, but when it does not work, there does not seem to be a plan B. I always think they can recover and finish in the first four, but they have to run things immediately.
Two of their next three games are against Mumbai, which could help because they have again badly started again. On paper, they have a strong alignment of strikers but seem to fail in tight proceedings, which is not a habit in which you want to fall.
Their depth of rotation also looks light, which could be more a problem as the tournament is advancing.
There is a long way to go, so expect the table to change, but so far it looks like the mega auction has shook things and we could have teams in the playoffs that were not there last year.
