Ben Whittaker made a statement with a categorical victory in the second round in his revenge match with Liam Cameron last month.
After falling from the ring during his first fight with Cameron, the injuries prevented the Olympic silver medalist from continuing and the professional Whittaker file took its first imperfection with a technical draw.
Whittaker was the subject of a meticulous examination after that, and celebrated wildly in the corner of his opponent after winning the second fight with style.
This has become a subject of discussion after the competition, although Anthony Warde and Lyndon Arthur, future potential rivals for Whittaker, refused to join the choir of criticism.
“After the fight, he went to the corner of Cameron,” said Warde Sky Sports. “He celebrated their faces. Was it justified? I don’t know because I don’t know if the team of Liam Cameron said things in preparation and from what I saw myself, Ben Whittaker had a lot of backlash, people saying that he is a cop, he lied and was not really injured. He had to pass throughout this period.
“Perhaps in his celebration, he was just a little outdated and it was at the press conference after the fight when he started to cry. Emotions were right for him.
“Sometimes, in the fire of the moment, you cannot really judge people for how they act or the things they do. It is sometimes the excitement and the emotions that become uncontrollable.
“Some people are simply better to hide it than others,” added Warde.
“Can you imagine your average Joe walking on the street, how they would react, or people at home if they were never in this position? They say they would react in a way, but how they really react that they do not know because they are not in this situation, they are not in this situation.”
Arthur, who lost a trilogy fight with Marde at the end of last month, holds his own victory over Cameron.
Reflecting on the celebration of Whittaker, he said Sky Sports: “I don’t think it’s fair, but I think what Andy Lee said – increased emotions, he had gone through a lot in the past six months, a lot of doubt, and I think it probably comes out by accident.”
Yarde will probably position himself for a world championship fight, although Arthur, who has lost only Marde and Dmitry Bivol, the best fighter in the division, could be a possible opponent for a future fight with Whittaker.
Arthur took note of the previous comments of Whittaker. “He was talking [rubbish] About me before leaving in the first fight against Cameron. It’s a big name, “said Arthur.” He’s just a bit of a clown. When we were in the Abas together, he posted photos of me, he was cool.
“It’s boxing. You can have competition, it can be healthy competition, but you don’t have to chat [rubbish] And lower people. But he is his character. I don’t hate that. Prince Naseem and everyone, they were the same but they were the kind of boxers I loved, I looked to grow. I can’t hate what he is doing.
“I understand but because it is against me or for me, I will think [that] naturally.”
The promoter Ben Shalom stressed that Whittaker has only 10 fights in his professional career and does not have to be rushed.
“I want to see him acquire experience with [new trainer] Andy Lee. I want to see him fight different styles. I want to see it in an international box. I want to see him develop as a fighter, “said Shalom Sky Sports.
“We believe and know that he has talent and we know that he has everything to become world champion and be one of the big ones.
“Can we now translate this? Can we give him the experience that this talent deserves so that he can achieve what his inheritance must be? This is what it is after this fight.
“Ten fights, the braking train is absolutely huge but I want to see it get his experience.”
