Researchers, scientists and self -proclaimed biohackers have adopted the idea that people play an important role in the way they age. Some say that aging can be slowed down. Others say it could even be reversible.
Blake Byers, co -founder of the Newlimit biotechnological research company, goes further.
“Once considered irreversible, the emerging science of epigenetic reprogramming has shown that aging is in fact malleable,” wrote Bryers X.
New Limit, which was co -founded by the CEO of Coinbase, Brian Armstrong, works to develop drugs that target aging engines using AI and epigenetics – and have collected $ 130 million in B series.
Jacob Kimmel, president of Newlimit, said that innovative progress in the last decade has shown that humans have the capacity to change the aging process.
“The fact that aging is malleable means that not only can you change the speed at which something happens – that you can prevent it from progressing at the same rate as you hope – but also once the pathology has developed, you have the hope of putting it back,” said Kimmel Fortune.
In Newlimit, research is underway to reprogram the older and younger old cells. However, Kimmel says that science is not yet ready for humans and hopes to take research in clinical trials in a few years. Currently, the treatments going back to the clock or the inverted age have only been promising in rodents.
The “most powerful lever”
Other researchers agree that aging has malleable qualities. Many indicate the available science that highlights the factors that contribute to people living longer and healthier.
“Although we cannot stop time, we can strongly influence the way we get older,” said Dr. Andrea Maier, professor of medical, healthy aging and dementia at the National University of Singapore. “The lifestyle is a powerful lever.”
Studies have suggested that people can live up to five more years if they have a good amount and good quality sleep. Those who think positively to age are more likely to live longer than those who do not. And, to join the Mediterranean diet, to eat whole foods, fruits, vegetables and lean meats, helped residents of blue areas to be 100. Even spending time in nature, or “forestry”, is a proven way to support the aging of mental health, which can therefore reduce the risk and chronic conditions and early mortality, Tamberly Conway, and cneo of Conservation conexionswhich provides nature therapy.
“Science is clear that life -style factors – nutrition, sleep, movement, stress and social connection – can slow organic aging and improve the duration of health,” explains Nichol Bradford, an investor at the forefront of human potential and AI, explains Nichol Bradford Fortune. “Genetics has established the basic line, but our daily choices shape the way we get older.” (The duration of health is the number of years you have experienced without illness.)
Elissa Epel, PHD, Director of UCSF Center of emotions of aging metabolismand author of Stress prescriptionsaid that chronic stress is the key to explaining how aging can be malleable.
“We can change our perceived stress, it’s very malleable, and therefore we can change our aging rate,” she says. “”Stress has direct biological effects and has a umbrella effect, shaping all our lifestyle factors, including what we eat, how we stick to health behaviors like exercise and how we sleep well. »»
Chronic stress increases the risk of heart disease, mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, and poor sleep, which can all contribute to previous mortality and shorter health.
But the lifestyle alone will not add decades to the life of anyone. “The effects can be modest, and currently there is no evidence that the maximum lifespan can be considerably prolonged,” said Dr. Brian Kennedy, a gerontologist and eminent professor of biochemistry and physiology at the National University of Singapore.
Dr Eric Topol, cardiologist and author of the new book Super agers: an approach based on evidence of longevityMake the quest to live a little longer. Although it praises the advantages of lifestyle factors to influence the aging trajectory, it focuses more on their impact on the reduction in the risk of chronic conditions associated with more advanced age. Science on something more, he adds, always evolves.
When asked if aging is reversible, Topol says: “It may be one day.” For the moment, he says, targeting the chronic conditions which can lead to early mortality, you extend your duration of health and your quality of life. If you can reduce the disease and live your last decades without illness, it is the greatest victory for longevity. “We can make great breakthroughs by preventing age-related diseases,” he said.
