New York governor Kathy Hochul announced on Monday that her condition will host a large new nuclear power plant designed to generate at least 1 gigawatt electricity.
“If you remove nuclear from the table, you should burn more fossil fuels,” said Hochul at a press conference. “It will not work for us here in New York.”
The Governor heads the New York Power Authority (NYPA), which has and operates two dozen power plants – mainly gas dams and turbines – to develop the new installation. The plans are still in their infancy: Nypa, an entity of the government of the State, has not yet chosen a location or a design.
Hochul said that the State will work with private partners to develop the power station and finance construction while buying the power it generates.
Among the sites considered, three nuclear power plants currently operating in the northern New York State, according to At the Wall Street Journal. All belong to Constellation Energy, which courts technological companies to buy results from its nuclear portfolio.
