Tottenham’s season is in crisis with pressure mounting on Ange Postecoglou.
Spurs’ 3-2 defeat to Everton leaves them 15th in the Premier League table – closer to the relegation zone than the European places.
The defeat, which saw Postecoglou’s side go down 3-0 at half-time to a side who had scored 15 goals in 20 games previously, was Spurs’ 12th defeat of the season and continues a dismal run of a victory – against basement club Southampton. – in their last 10 matches.
Spurs’ dozen defeats this season are the most they have suffered after 22 league matches in more than a quarter of a century – while they have managed just nine Premier League wins in the last nine month – losing 24 of the last 50 matches.
So, what’s next for Postecoglou and Tottenham ahead of a busy end to January, on and off the pitch? Sky Sports News’ Michael Bridge explains it all…
Is Postecoglou under strong pressure?
My understanding is that he is not under any significant pressure. I think there is pressure because they are 15th in the championship. For them, this is unacceptable.
But Postecoglou said it himself. He also said, and he is right, that they are still in three cup competitions, but the league position is not acceptable.
So there is pressure. But as far as his job security goes, I believe he still has the full support of the board.
But the next three or four weeks will determine Tottenham’s season. If Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero return in the coming weeks, they could qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League, they could reach the Carabao Cup final, they could beat Aston Villa in the FA Cup.
Then you turn around and say, actually, this could still be a good season.
However, they could lose to Hoffenheim in Europe on Thursday, be knocked out of the top eight and then have two more games to reach the latter stages of the Europa League. They could lose at Anfield in the second leg of the Carabao Cup and they could travel to Villa.
If this were to happen, the months between us and May could be difficult.
Why is the board giving him this time?
I think it’s accepted that these injuries are seriously derailing the team. These aren’t just casual injuries, these are serious injuries.
People may blame him for the style of play that led to hamstring injuries. You can’t blame Postecoglou for the fact that Dominic Solanke kicked a ball in training and his knee worked.
Postecoglou has been telling me and my colleagues over the last two or three weeks: Dom needs help. And now Dom is hurt.
It is January 20 and no recruits have been recruited. Yes, January is difficult, but he really needs help now.
Will Postecoglou get this support in the January transfer market?
I believe it. They have to bring in players. January is not easy, but it is achievable. The Spurs had some good windows in January.
For example, Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur were signed in January and are now Tottenham’s two best players. So it can happen.
But European clubs are not as keen to give away their players in January. We now have European football in January, which has never happened before.
But even so, I still believe the Spurs will sign at least one player, but it has to happen very soon.
Where do Spurs fans stand in Postecoglou?
Mixed is probably a fair assessment at the moment after the defeat against Everton.
When he joined us, I had never known love like this. Postecoglou said it himself, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was like being in a nightclub. Even Robbie Williams started singing songs about him.
And then they had a bad run in that game against Chelsea, that 4-1 loss on Monday Night Football. The season went off the rails afterward and Postecoglou didn’t really recover from that.
Many fans just think it’s not his fault and he wasn’t supported. They feel the team isn’t good enough, they need money and they need better recruiting.
While some fans are upset that he only has one way to play. Some believe the injuries are due to him, and they are unhappy with the high line and open midfield.
Some think he’s stubborn and others think maybe it’s time for a change, but who are you calling on? We saw Ruben Amorim being so unsure about joining a club mid-season with so much work to do.
Daniel Levy has already sacked Spurs managers mid-season, what would that look like?
I don’t know if the fans would accept a temp like Ryan Mason, like they did the last two times. With the whispers I hear, I don’t think they would accept that.
Postecoglou still maintains good relations with the Spurs hierarchy. The head of football operations is Scott Munn, who is Australian and an Ange supporter.
Postecoglou works very well with Johan Lange, the technical director of Tottenham. But the next three to four weeks will be crucial for Tottenham’s season.
If Postecoglou were to be sacked soon, where would that leave Daniel Levy with Spurs fans?
I don’t think Daniel Levy, personally, would want to be in a hurry to fire another manager.
But if he did, it would cause a very tense final few months of the season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in terms of atmosphere.
Spurs are riddled with injuries at the moment, is there an explanation why?
There is no doubt that given Tottenham’s style of play, this risk exists.
I also think that poor recruitment has caught up with the club. I look at the team, and I don’t consider them a top-six team right now.
I think in fairness to Postecoglou he probably didn’t give himself enough credit when they finished fifth in the first season without Harry Kane.
Spurs spent a few seasons playing poorly, winning 1-0 with a Kane thunderbolt. They relied on him too much. They didn’t have it last season, and they still had a pretty good season.
This season you saw a number of injuries, poor performances, and then Heung-Min Son, who had a difficult season, is a year older.
And one of the most disappointing facts is that I don’t think, and maybe it’s a collective responsibility, that they didn’t really plan the extra-European matches.
Last season, Spurs were not in Europe. They were knocked out of the FA Cup. They were eliminated from the Carabao Cup in the second round. So they only played about 42 games.
This year, they have already played their 34th match. They have two more European matches this month. They have a second leg in the Carabao Cup. They have the FA Cup.
