Struggle
- Russia said it had opened a criminal investigation into the alleged “cannibalistic massacre” of at least seven civilians in the village of Russkoe Porechnoye in western Russia, which has been occupied by Ukraine since last August. Bodies were reportedly found by Russian soldiers in the basement of a residential building.
- The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, Oleksandr Syrskii, said his army suffered from a shortage of mechanized brigades. He also said that military mobilization capacity is “not sufficient” to cover military needs, and that gaps are filled “within reason” by deploying personnel with other expertise.
- The Ukrainian General Staff accused Russian forces of using munitions equipped with banned chemicals on 434 occasions in Ukraine as of December 2024, bringing the total to 5,389 such cases documented since February 2023.
- The Ukrainian Air Force says it shot down 43 of 61 Russian drone strikes in a nighttime raid targeting nine regions of Ukraine. No major damage or casualties were immediately reported.
- The Interfax news agency said Russian forces had captured the village of Vozdvyzhenka in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, citing the Russian Defense Ministry.
- The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Russian forces have recently advanced into Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces have captured some territory, as well as Ukraine’s Kupyansk, Lyman , Chasiv Yar, Torestsk, Kurakhove and Velyka Novosilka. Ukrainian forces have since recaptured lost positions at Chasiv Yar and Toretsk, the ISW said.
- The ISW also said that Russian volunteer military detachments continue to strengthen the Russian army by recruiting women to join the war.

- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has again called for “strong support” from Ukraine’s allies and more U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems. This follows a week of more than 1,000 Russian air attacks.
