Subriel Matias and Elvis Rodriguez could fight for the top spot in the IBF light welterweight rankings.
The potential matchup has not been confirmed, and it could depend on whether WBO 140-pound champion Teofimo Lopez chooses to swerve in defense against dangerous former IBF champion Matias (21-2, 21 KO ). Since Teo is complaining on X 24/7 about Top Rank, he can choose not to contact Matias.
Clash for No. 1?
“The Dominican Kid” Rodriguez (17-1-1, 13 years old is ranked #7 with the IBF at 140 and has won his last six fights since losing to Kenneth Sims Jr. by an eight-round majority decision on the 22nd May 2021.
Matias, 32, lost his IBF title to Liam Paro last year on June 15 after being roughed up in a fight loosely ruled by the referee. Paro got away with a lot of brutal tactics that should have resulted in a points warning and points deductions in this fight.
Richardson Hitchins now holds the IBF light welterweight title after defeating Paro by a 12-round split decision last month on June 7. So if the Matias-Rodriguez fight happened, the winner would face Hitchins for the IBF title.
