Ronald Araujo would like to test himself in the Premier League, giving Arsenal a huge boost in their pursuit of the vice-captain of Barcelona, linked to Juventus.
Araujo is looking to revive his career after a significant period of absence due to a hamstring injury and, in a period in which talks over a new contract have not progressed, has been heavily linked with a departure from Barcelona.
Serie A giants Juventus are known admirers and are understood to have recently agreed terms on a loan deal with Araujo, before Arsenal were tipped to join the race for his signature.
Leading Spanish publication Sports World claim that Araujo did not hesitate to discuss his situation with those close to him in the Barcelona dressing room. The centre-back has reportedly admitted privately that he is considering leaving, with the expected arrival of Jonathan Tah on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen only further limiting his minutes.
In these behind-the-scenes conversations, it is alleged that Araujo confirmed that he would prioritize a move to the Premier League if he left Barcelona.
Araujo believes Mikel Arteta’s style of football would suit him and he would be interested to hear what Arsenal have to say. It should be emphasized that a transfer to Juventus, whose desire to sign him seems the strongest at this stage, has not been ruled out.
Barcelona’s refusal to consider a loan request further boosts Arsenal’s hopes of signing Araujo. Juventus are not believed to be able to finalize a permanent transfer, while the Gunners may have the financial wherewithal to complete a deal.
The Bianconeri are also looking to strengthen their forward line as a priority – Randal Kolo Muani, linked with Man Utd and Tottenham, is their main target – and the Frenchman would absorb a significant portion of the club’s wage bill.
As for Araujo, he has 18 months remaining on his current contract and has been warned that the club will look to cash in if he does not extend soon.
