The former head of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, was officially accused of having directed a coup d’etat intended to keep him in power after having lost the elections in 2022 to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The right -wing politician was accused by the country’s attorney general of leading a “criminal organization” to overthrow democracy in the most populous nation in Latin America.
The prosecutors said that 33 other people were involved in the conspiracy, including the candidate vice-president of Bolsonaro, General Walter Braga Clean and nearly two dozen retirement or higher military service.
Part of the plot included plans to assassinate Lula to prevent him from taking office, prosecutors said.
The Supreme Court of Brazil must now consider the accusations and decide to make a trial. If it is convicted, Bolsonaro, an ally of US President Donald Trump, could incur a long prison sentence.
Charmor of Brazilian conservatives, Bolsonaro has already been declared inadmissible to present itself to public functions until 2030 due to attacks against the country’s electoral system.
He also faces two other judicial cases concerning the alleged falsification of a covid vaccine certificate and the illegal sale of jewelry given to him as head of state.
In a Filing to the Supreme Court, Attorney-General Paulo Gonet Said the Charge “Describe Deeds Carried Out by a President of the Republic who Forms A Structured Criminal Organization With Other Civil and Military Figures to Prevent the Result of the Popular Will Express in the 2022 elections to be carried out ”.
They were based on a detailed report of the federal police last November.
There was no immediate reaction from Bolsonaro, who previously spent as a victim of politically motivated persecution.
In recent days, the former president has attempted to rally his conservative forces at the Congress to adopt an amnesty law for alleged coupters, but the speed of the prosecution of the end of the workforce seemed have taken by surprise.
