Voters have given the extreme right
Change of share of voting since 2021
Christian Democrats, AFD and Die Linke won more votes than in the last general elections.
There have been smaller surprises, including the last -minute push in the far left part
Stressing the displeasure widespread with Mr. Scholz’s government in the past three years, the three coalition parties – the Social Democrats, the Greens and the FDP – have lost support.
Vote has changed since 2021
The Germans expressed two votes when they go to the polls. The first vote will elect a direct representative of their district, while the second vote is expressed for a party.
Arrows show the increase or decrease in the voting share of each party during the second vote, compared to the last general elections.
Support for social democrats has plunged everywhere, but nowhere more than in the east. Christian Democrats have achieved gains in southern and west districts.
The coalitions
Christian Democrats will have to build a coalition to govern because they have not won the majority of seats. Given the results of Sunday, the most likely twinning is the CDU and the outgoing social democrats. This combination, known as the Grand Coalition, is historically stable and has been tested several times, more recently during the last mandate of Angela Merkel as Chancellor.

for the majority
The greatest possible coalition, that between Christian Democrats and AFD, is politically not an option, because traditional parties have committed to not working with the far -right party.
