US President Donald Trump imposed threatening prices for Canada, Mexico and China on Saturday – and it didn’t take long for countries to respond.

Trump has signed a prices of 25% prices on Mexico and Canada goods, and a 10% right on Chinese imports, which is expected to start on Tuesday. Canada’s energy resources face at a rate of less than 10% to “minimize the disruptive effects that we could have on petrol and domestic heating prices”, according to a senior administration.

In the decree, Trump said that if the countries – the three trade partners of the United States – retaliate, it could be welcomed by an “increase or a scope of scope” of the already imposed functions.

In a PublishTrump said the tasks had been imposed “due to the major threat of illegal foreigners and fatal drugs killing our citizens, including fentanyl”.

The United States is about 1.6 billion of dollars in business each year with Canada, Mexico and China. The prices should be used both as negotiation chips and methods to make changes in foreign policy – in particular with regard to immigration and drug problems – by the Trump administration.

The reaction of one of the three countries was rapid and decisive, while the others seemed to adopt more approach to waiting for Trump’s prices. Here is an overview of their answers.

Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau threw up 25% reprisal rates against $ 155 billion in American products shortly after the announcement of Trump prices.

He said that dollars’ dollars’ dollars’ rights will be taxed on Tuesday with additional $ 125 billion prices should be presented in 21 days “to allow Canadian and supply chains to seek find alternatives “.

“Like American prices, our response will also be large and include everyday items such as American beer, wine and bourbon, fruit and fruit juices, including orange juice, as well as Let vegetables, perfume, clothing and shoes, Trudeau said in a press conference on Saturday evening. “It will include the main consumer products such as household appliances, furniture and sports equipment, and materials like wood and plastics, as well as much, much more.”

Speaking directly to American citizens, Trudeau added: “It is a choice which, yes, will harm the Canadians, but beyond, it will have real consequences for you, the American people.”

Reprisals should exacerbate price increases in the United States more and elsewhere. The price of everything, from cars and electronics to toys and food should be affected.

Trudeau added that “he should not be so”.

“Yes, we have had our differences in the past, but we have always found a way to go beyond them. As I have already said, if President Trump wants to inaugurate a new golden age for the United States, the A better way is to join Canada, not to punish us, “he said.

Mexico

Mexico also promised reprisals following the news, but has not revealed details.

President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized Trump’s prices and said that she had asked the Secretary of Economy to “implement plan B on which we worked, which includes tariff and non -tariff measures to defend the interests of the interests of the interests of Mexico”.

Mexico president Claudia Sheinbaum made gestures while talking about the policies of American president Donald Trump at a press conference in the National Palace, Mexico, Mexico, January 21, 2025.

In a Post long on xThe president added: “We categorically reject the slander of the White House of the Government of Mexico alleging alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention to intervene on our territory.”

“Mexico does not want to confront. We start from the collaboration between neighboring countries,” she said in the post, translated by NBC. “Mexico does not only want fentanyl to reach the United States, but it does not want it to reach anywhere.”

“We must work together in a global way, but always in the principles of shared responsibility, mutual trust, collaboration and above all, respect for sovereignty, which is not negotiable. Coordination, yes; subordination, no “She added.

China

China said it would take legal action from the World Trade Organization in response to duties and “would take the necessary countermeasures”.

“The United States’s unilateral price hike seriously violates the WTO rules, does nothing to solve its own problems and disrupts normal economic and commercial cooperation between China and the United States,” said the Ministry of the Ministry on Sunday Chinese trade in a press release, according to a translation of the NBC.

“In response to this unjustified action, China will take legal action from the WTO and take the necessary countermeasures to firmly protect its rights and interests.” China complained to the WTO on prices before, In particular concerning EU prices on Chinese electric vehicles last year.

The fact that China stopped below an immediate escalation raised the hope that there could be a certain place to avoid a total trade war between the two countries. Prices less than 10% imposed on Chinese manufacturing goods can also be a relief given of repeated threats by Trump on the campaign track to impose rights of 60% or more to imports of the country.

In its statement, China has rejected Trump’s comments on fentanyl, describing it as a “domestic problem”.

“China urges the United States to adopt an objective and rational approach to its national problems, including fentanyl, rather than resorting to pricing threats to other countries,” he said.

Synthetic fentanyl opioid is an addictive drug that causes several thousand deaths by overdose each year in the United States. The chemicals necessary to make drugs are mainly produced in China and Mexico. Washington and Beijing had already agreed to cooperate on the issue.

‘World War of Commerce

On a note on Sunday, Paul Ashworth, chief economics of Capital Economics in North America, said the prices were “only the first strike of what could become a very destructive world trade war”.

He said he expects imports from the European Union to be targeted in the coming months, with universal prices – very announced by Trump on the campaign track – expected in April.

The economic impact will be important for all countries involved, according to Ashworth.

“Since exports to the United States represent approximately 20% of its GDP, today’s prices could plunge Canadian and Mexican savings into recession later this year,” he wrote.

“The sharp increase in American inflation of these prices and other long -term measures will happen even faster and be greater than what we were initially expected.”
