“Wicked”, the successful film based on Broadway music of the same name (which is in itself a loose adaptation of the 1995 book “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” by Gregory Maguire, which is Himself a twist on the “Oz” books of L. Frank Baum and the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz”) collected a lot of love from the public and criticism. While our own review found him a little disorderly, the majority of criticisms appreciated the brilliant and daring adaptation of Broadway, praising the performances of the Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo stars in particular. They both act and sing their hearts like Glinda (the “good witch”) and Elphaba (the “wicked witch of the West”) respectively, which led some fans to be completely shocked when they checked the announcements nomination to the Oscars and saw this “Wicked” had not been nominated for the best original song or the best original partition.
“Wicked” made four nominations, for the best actress for Erivo, the best support actress for Grande, the best editing of films and the price of the best coveted film, so it is not as if the voters of the Academy of the Academy completely ignored the film. It turns out that there is a good reason that “wicked” did not obtain music nominations, and it is because the song and the score are not exactly original in the film.
Wicked’s music comes from the Broadway show
“Wicked” is not the first great successful film based on a Broadway musical, but many of the others added new music to qualify for the awards. “Chicago” added “I Moit on” and “the miserable” added “sudden”, for example, which made them eligible for the best original song under the rules of the academy. THE official rules declare that to be eligible for the best original song, lyrics and music must be completely original:
“Consists of words and music, which are both original and written specifically for the film. There must be a clearly audible, intelligible and substantial interpretation (not necessarily visually presented) both lyrics and melody, used In the body of the motion image or as the first musical signal in the end credits. “
Since “Wicked” has used the songs and music of the musical, with some minor modifications, mainly directed by the original composer of music, Stephen Schwartz. (It was Schwartz who helped decide to divide the story into two films and finish the first half with “Defeying Gravity”, which is quite neat.) Because there is no music in ” Wicked “which is not also in Broadway music, with the exception of the extension of a few songs, she simply does not qualify for the best original song or the best categories of original scores. Fans will still have a lot to take root when the Night of Oscars arrives, with chances of winning some of the most important prices of the night.
