Working in collaboration in comedy can be a sort of delicate thing, because everyone seems to have a slightly different way of doing things. A film or a television series can be extremely collaborative and encourage members of distribution and crew to contribute their own ideas, while another can restrict everyone to follow the vision of a single person or a small group selected with a specific vision. Egos and contradictory ideas can make things even more disorderly, like this time a guest star “Seinfeld” learned to the hard that the series was the baby of the star Jerry Seinfeld, which meant that he was not very eager to hear suggestions.
In the fiercely funny episode of festivus “The Strike”, Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is struck by a man wearing a jewelry in the dentist of Dr. Tim Whatley (Bryan Cranston) Hankukah Party, inciting him to give him his false number. This leads to a rather embarrassing interaction when she really needs her help later, but it is quite funny because he carries even more denim. In fact, it is in a full Canadian tuxedo with denim-surnim.
The man known as “Denim Vest” (his real name is Steve) is one of the most memorable unique characters in the story “Seinfeld”, and he was perfectly played by the Canadian actor Kevin McDonald. Unfortunately, as McDonald has shared it over the years, Seinfeld himself was not exactly open to the artistic contribution. (Or even learn the names of his own guest star!)
McDonald had an idea, but Seinfeld shot him
In a 2010 interview with The Club AVMcDonald revealed that his interactions with the star of the series were not so friendly. (However, it should be noted that the actor also said CBC This breast was “very nice” for him for him 10 years later.) He explained that while he was spinning his outdoor scene with Louis -Dreyfus, he tried to give it – very unwanted – Contribution:
“Two of the writers were with him, and he was not satisfied with the joke, so he and the two writers started to Spritzing jokes. I just returned to the days’ Kids in the Hall ” where we would be on the set like that, where it was a kind of common thing, so without thinking of everyone. Turned back and looked at me and told me:” Noooo “. [Laughs.] And then he turned to his screenwriters and they continued jokes in Spritzing. “”
McDonald, the accomplished Canadian, took this well enough, saying that he had realized that he had “exceeded his limits” and that he fully understood. While Seinfeld was certainly under a good amount of stress as a showrunner after the release of the creator of the Larry David series, he still didn’t have to be so rude for McDonald. After all, McDonald was already an actor accomplished in its own right as part of the comedy sketch troop, the children in the room, and he was just trying to help.
Seinfeld apparently hates McDonald for any reason
In the interview with the club AV, the interviewer stressed that on the commentary on the episode, Seinfeld moans audible and says something that looks like “UGH, this guy” when McDonald appears on the screen. McDonald said he really didn’t mean any offense, but he had clearly bored breast in one way or another. He also noted that Seinfeld had not even taken the time to learn his name, constantly calling him “Dave” throughout the rehearsals. (Dave Foley, another star of “Kids in the Hall”, was regularly on television on the series “News Radio” at the time.) Whether intentional to try to injure McDonald in one way or another or simply an indication that Seinfeld really knew only a child in the room “, as McDonald joked, the only Seinfeld himself knows.
Anyway, “The Strike” is one of the best “Seinfeld” episodes for several reasons, and Denim Vest is absolutely one of them. Combined with the wild opening of Cranston and Jerry Stiller as Frank Costanza teaching everyone Festivus, it is an essential vacation episode that is above the rest. And hey – It taught us all of this unless you have it as an incredible amount of boastful to remove it, do not try to wear denim -surnim.
