Louise Penny, a writer of the mystery of world renowned Canadian murder, canceled an American tour for her latest book, citing the repeated threats from President Donald Trump of a trade war against Canada and annexation.
Penny announced the move to social networks, saying that it was “a painful decision” because of the many professional friends and knowledge that she had made in the United States after being turned there for 20 years.
“Please understand that this decision is not intended to punish the Americans. It’s about standing with my Canadian compatriots, “Penny said in a long, thoughtful message to his fans.
Penny is the author of the beloved series Inspector of Inspector Gamache Police Murder Mystery Novel, which takes place in his own origin province of Quebec.
His latest book, entitled The black wolf, is the 20th volume of the Inspector Gamache series, which has sold more than 18 million copies worldwide in English and several other languages.
Books have surpassed Canadian, American and international lists while stories follow the adventures of the head of the Quebec Security Homicides department, provincial police.
Here’s what she wrote.
Louise Penny: I can barely believe that I say that, but given the continuous threat of an uninsured trade war against Canada by the American president, I don’t think I can enter the United States.
At least not before this economic sword, which could throw hundreds of thousands of Canadians (as well as the Americans) in poverty, is completely removed.
There are, of course, other things that the American president is making the visit to the United States unpleasant. Oh dear. It’s so painful to say it.

I visited friends, I made friends, personally and professionally, with so many Americans. I have such respect, affection, for them. For you. But … enough. What is happening is not only a potential economic disaster for Canada and so many other nations, it is a moral injury.
In that spirit, I am really sorry to say that until things change, I cannot do any events in person in the United States. Which means, for the first time in 20 years, not on tour in the United States.

The cancellation of the tour means that Penny will not appear at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC as planned this fall to launch his new book in front of an audience of 2000 people, a decision reported for the first time by the Washington Post.
Penny said that the evening was going to be a highlight of her career, but she withdrew from this appearance after Trump dismissed the entire board of directors and declared himself president last month.
Ticket sales at Kennedy Center have dived since then.

Penny’s decision to cancel his American tour has obtained wide support on the social networks of dozens of Americans and Canadians, who praised his integrity and courage.
Instead, and with the support of her publishers, Penny said that she would launch the book in Canada, and she invited all her American fans to attend this event.
“I decided that instead of launching the black Wolf in Washington, DC at Kennedy Center, I will do the event in the capital of my country Ottawa, at the National Arts Center. It will be Tuesday October 28, ”she wrote.
In the days following the launch of the NAC in Ottawa, Penny wrote, she will organize other launch and promotion events of the Canadian book before completing her tour at the Haskell Free Library and Opera House.
“This remarkable place was built in 1904 and is on the right Smack Dab on the border between Quebec and Vermont. The haskell was built by the two countries as a symbol of our strong bonds of friendship, “said Penny.
“It is a physical reflection of what we believe. That what is happening politically is one thing, and transient. What is happening in our hearts is indestructible. »»
Penny said she hoped that the Americans will come to her Canadian book events.
“You will be welcomed with open arms. As an older. As village colleagues with three pines. Where kindness and decency exist, “she wrote.
