Delta airlines is a partnership with the Jetzero aerospace startup to introduce a design of revolutionary aircraft which has the potential to transform the future of commercial flight.
This new design, called Bended Wing Body (BWB) plane, differs considerably from traditional tube and wing plans in service.
By combining the wings and fuselage in a large and wide shape, the BWB reduces the drag and the weight, resulting in improvements in energy efficiency going up to 50% compared to today’s plane.

Body plane with mixed wings (Jetzero)
Driving to net-zero emissions by 2050
The Bended Wing Body (BWB) plane represents a critical component of Delta’s strategy to decarbonize aviation, its energy efficiency gains directly supporting the net-zero target of the 2050 airline. By taking advantage of the existing engine technology, the design avoids the delay associated with the development of new propulsion systems, allowing faster adoption between fleets.
The capacity of the aircraft to transport more than 250 passengers, corresponding to medium -sized international planes in models with range and large body in seats, positions it as a practical solution to reduce emissions without compromising operational needs. Its engine placement and its compatibility with noise with the current airport infrastructure takes up environmental and logistical challenges, while integration with sustainable aviation fuels amplifies its role in reducing carbon emissions to life cycle.
This multifaceted approach shows how the innovative cell technology can accelerate industry change to cleaner travel.

Delta’s role: transforming innovation into reality
Delta is deeply involved in the project beyond financial support. Thanks to its sustainable skies laboratory, the airline contributes to operational expertise to help make BWB aircraft commercially viable. This includes maintenance advice, airport operations and other practical considerations necessary for the success of the plane in the daily airline service.
Amelia Deluca, Delta’s sustainability director, underlines the importance of this collaboration, declaring that working with Jetzero to develop new air experience and passengers is an essential step towards the progress of fuel economy and innovation objectives of the air transport industry.

Rethink the passenger experience
The interior of the BWB plane is carefully reflected to improve comfort and accessibility. The wider and flatter shape of the airplane body allows new cabin provisions. Delta aims to provide a dedicated air bin space for each passenger, more accessible seats and toilets and fewer lines to create a less congested environment.
In addition, the engines will be mounted on top of the plane, which should considerably reduce the noise of the cabin and the drop in noise pollution around airports.

Supported by industry and government support
This partnership follows the reception by Jetzero of an important US Air Force subsidy in 2023 to build a large -scale demonstrator plane, with a first flight planned for 2027. The subsidy, as well as collaborations with aerospace leaders such as Northrop Grumman and composites on scale, reflect solid government support and from the BWB concept. Delta has been involved in Jetzero since 2021, providing valuable advice on how to market this technology.

The need for revolutionary technologies in aviation
Over the past 50 years, the aeronautical industry has produced impressive energy efficiency gains, improving by around 80% thanks to innovations like Winglets and lighter materials. Delta alone saved more than 40 million fuel gallons in 2024 by optimizing operations and improving its fleet. However, industry recognizes that progressive improvements are insufficient to achieve urgent climatic objectives. Technologies and BWB planes are necessary to make significant reductions in emissions and fuel consumption that the future requires.

Kurt’s main dishes
The collaboration of Delta and Jetzero marks a significant step towards a clearer, quieter and more efficient future for plane trips. Although the challenges remain, in particular regulatory approvals and ensuring the comfort of passengers with the new design, this partnership illustrates the dedication of the aviation industry to innovation and sustainability. The future of the flight is reshaped by daring ideas such as body aircraft with mixed wings, which promise to make trips by plane more responsible for the environment while improving the overall passenger experience.
