There has been an unexpected turn to the title race in the past in recent weeks, with Inter Milan and Napoli heading towards the level of the finish line at points.
Unlike most of the other European leagues, the difference in goals does not come into play to determine the winner if there is nothing to divide both parties after 38 games.
Instead, there would be a play-off to determine who becomes the champions of Italy.
But how does it work and what is the probability that it will happen in 2024-25?

What happens if the teams finish the level?
Serie A brought back a very important rule in 2022: if two sides in competition for the title – or in the face of relegation – at the level of the points, a play -off is used to determine their fate.
Although the difference in objectives is not used to separate the teams in the final classification, it determines who would have a home advantage in the single match.
If the playoffs end with a draw after 90, the match jumps for additional time and goes directly to penalties.
It doesn’t matter if a team beat the other during the regular season, it’s only one hard but exciting match.

A rare scenario
The idea that the title TGE was settled via a penalty shootout after a full season might seem unjust for some. This is perhaps the reason why the rule was initially abandoned in 2005.
However, others may affirm that an eliminatory between two inseparable teams is the fairest conclusion as possible.
The league has reintroduced the rule from the 2022-23 season. However, in the past two years, it has not been necessary: Napoli and Inter have won their respective titles with two -digit points in progress during the previous campaigns.
Only once in Serie, a story decided an eliminatory decided by the champion. This came in 1964, when Inter and Bologna each finished with 54 points after 34 games. Bologna won 2-0 in the decision maker at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
Instead, the play-offs have recently been used to settle relegation. In 2022-23, Hellas Verona beat Spezia 3-1 to preserve their status as a series A.
Who is facing Inter and Napoli?
Inter and Napoli have posted identical records through 33 games – 21 wins, eight draws and four defeats.
The run-in will be essential, and it remains the game of anyone before the last five games.
