An uninhabited antarctic outpost populated by penguins. One of the smallest economies in the world. An Arctic archipelago with more polar bears than people.
To quote Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, it really seems that “nowhere on Earth is safe” of the radical prices of US President Donald Trump.
Trump shaken the markets, manufacturers and more Wednesday announcing a basic line of 10% of prices on imports in the United States – and much higher on the goods of certain places, especially those with high commercial surpluses with states. By applying his steep and wide prices, analysts suggested that Trump has turned the world’s order upside down.
But for many observers, the most confusing aspect of Trump list was that he understood some of the most distant territories and islands and the smallest in the world. The places which, in some cases, are Widely inhabited by penguins.
Like Australia’s Heard and McDonald Islands in the sub-anarctic region, one of the most remote places on the earth, and which, according to the Australian government websitehave been visited by humans than around 242 times since 1855.
“The Heard and McDonald Islands are completely uninhabited. Zero population. I suppose that we are going to priced the seagulls?” wrote Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, a principal researcher at the American Immigration Council, on X.
In this spirit, here are some of these territories, the prices they face – and what they really export.
British Indian Ocean territory: 10%
The British Indian Ocean territory is an archipelago of 58 islands covering approximately 640,000 square kilometers of ocean, halfway between East Africa and Indonesia.
It is not a tourist destination. Access is limited and you need a license to travel there, according to the Territory website. He has no permanent population, but around 3,000 American and British soldiers and civil entrepreneurs live on the island of Diego Garcia, according to the CIA Factbook.
Its American imports totaled around US $ 462,500 in 2024, according to US Census Bureau. Its main products were IT and electronic products, followed by breeding and breeding products.
According to the CIA Factbook, any economic activity focuses on Diego Garcia, where “construction projects and various services necessary to support the military installation are carried out by military and contractual employees of the United Kingdom, Mauritius, the Philippines and the United States”.
Heard islands and McDonald: 10%
The HEARD and McDonald Islands of remote Antarctic form together an uninhabited Australian territory. The mainly sterile islands between Madagascar and Antarctica have two active volcanoes and can only be reached in sea.
“Due to extreme isolation … with constant weather and maritime conditions, human activities in the region have been and remain limited,” said the Australian government Antarctic program website.
And yet, for reasons which are not immediately clear, the American imports by the uninhabited islands totaled US $ 13,590 in 2024, according to the US Census Bureau. This consisted mainly of electrical equipment and household appliances, IT and electronic programs and transport equipment.
A go back to the goalkeeper suggests that some of the data from these islands and the island of Norfolk can come from erroneous shipments.
The CIA booklet Do not list any economic activity for the Heard and McDonald Islands, saying that they are “populated by a large number of species of birds, seals and penguins” and that “the islands are mainly used for research, with a limited fishing authorized in surrounding waters”.
The reciprocal prices of the “liberation day” of American president Donald Trump were described as “meticulously planned”, but among the targets are the African country without coast of Lesotho, an island which shelters an American air base, and the island heard of Australia and the McDonald Islands – where most residents are Penguins.
Norfolk Island: 29%
The island of Norfolk in the Pacific, another Australian territory, with a population of around 2,000 people, has received more serious tariff treatment.
The Trump administration, in its calculation, says that the former British criminal colony has 58% of prices in the United States – and it responded with a 29% tariff on the island, whose economy revolves around tourism. It is about 1,600 kilometers east of Sydney.

The administrator of the island of Norfolk, George Plant, the representative of the Australian government there, examined him.
“To my knowledge, we do not export anything in the United States,” he told the Associated Press. “We do not charge any prices on anything. I cannot think of any non -pricing barrier which would be in place either, so we scratch our heads here.”
Their American imports in 2024 totaled around $ 191,000 in the United States, according to US Census Bureau. The vast majority of them were in a category called “returned goods”, which is the goods returned after being imported into the United States, these were mainly transport equipment ($ 25,000 American) and IT and electronic products (US $ 14,770).
THE CIA Fabook Said that the territory economy is high in income, with key tourism and re -export industries.
The island of Norfolk, an external territory of Australia in the Pacific Ocean, was struck by 29% tariffs by American President Donald Trump despite no known export to states. Jesse Schiller and Rachel Evans, two Canadians who run a business on the island, explain how they react to the price.
Svalbard and Jan Mayen: 10%
Jan Mayen is a small Arctic island, with perhaps more polar bears than people. The CIA booklet Describes it as “sorry” and “sterile”.
The only inhabitants of Jan Mayen, who have been part of Norway since 1930, are the staff of the Norwegian army and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. The island – 600 kilometers northeast of Iceland – is partly covered with glaciers.

Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. Just under 3,000 people live there, most of them in the most northern urban community in the world, Longyearbyen, according to the Svalbard tourism website.
The two regions now face 10%prices. Their American imports in 2024 totaled just under $ 42,000 in the United States, according to US Census Bureau. These were largely non -electric machines, followed by computer and electronic products.
According to the CIA FabookSvalbard’s economy is largely made up of the exploitation of coal, tourism and research, a whale and key fishing base, and also houses the world safe. The booklet does not list anything for Jan May’s economy, saying that it has only been “visited by occasionally by seal hunters and trappers over the centuries”.

Tokelau: 10%
This nation is made up of three tropical coral islands and shelters 1,500 people on a combined area of 10 square kilometers.
One of the smallest economies of the South Pacific, Tokelau survives subsistence agriculture, fishing and finance of New Zealand, which has the islands as one of its territories.

Their American imports in 2024 totaled $ 177,600 in the United States, according to US Census Bureau. Almost all of this was in a category called “other special classification provisions” or articles that do not fit perfectly into other categories. THE CIA Fabook Said that the majority of Tokelau exports are cars, phones, clothes, iron fasteners and fabrics. The United States is not listed as one of its main business partners.
According to the COMMONWEALTH Chamber of Commerce websiteTokelau has one of the smallest economies in the world, and its main sources of income are the sales of coprates (dried coconut products), postage stamps, crafts, crafts and parents’ shipments in New Zealand.
Cocos Islands (Keeling): 10%
Another Australian territory, these 27 coral islands are located in the Indian Ocean between Australia and Indonesia and represent approximately 14 square kilometers. Only about 593 people live there, according to the CIA Factbook.
Its economy is largely based on agriculture (such as bananas, legs and coconuts), tourism and coprame products.
For a small set of islands, its American imports were on the largest side at around 1.1 million US dollars, according to US Census Bureau. The most important category was the “returned goods”, followed by IT and electronic products and transport equipment.
The CIA factbook indicates that the islands send 31% of its exports – ships – to the United States
