Scottie Scheffler equaled the record at least at a PGA Tour event when he stormed an eight -blow victory at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Texas.
The n ° 1 in the world, carded a last day of 63 to finish -31 for the tournament and eight at the shelter of Erik Van Rooyen from South Africa to win his first PGA Tour of the year victory during his native tournament.
The American equaled the score record of 72 holes in the PGA Tour on Sunday, finishing at 253, and could have hoasted a spectacular 59 if he had played the last three holes in three sous, but a second Bogey of the day and eight birds.
He sought to break the record of the PGA Tour with an eight -foot stewed putt on the 18th, but he slipped by the left side of the hole and had to be satisfied on the one hand of the record set by Justin Thomas at the Sony Open 2017 and equaled six years later by Ludvig Åberg to the RSM Classic.
Van Rooyen equaled 63 of Scheffler to finish at 23 sous, three shots in front of Sam Stevens and four in front of another favorite in the hometown, Jordan Spieth.
Eight golfers – Sam Burns, Mark Hubbard, Will Gordon, Eric Cole, Kurt Kitayama, Ricky Castillo, Adam Schenk and Takumi Kanaya – tied in fifth row.
After an interruption linked to the weather on Friday and a TEE time at the end of the afternoon for the third round on Saturday which finished after the twilight, it was a good navigation to Scheffler on the last day of the tournament.
He started the round with an eight -stroke lead and recorded five birdies, a bogy then an eagle in the ninth for a score of 30 of 30.
He was 29 years old through the first 63 holes and moved to record territory with birdies on holes 11, 14 and 15.
But with the pure and simple record in sight, he found the harsh of the tee on the 17th and, after his chip shot rolled green, settled for Bogey.
Scheffler, whose best finish Nelson was an equality for the fifth two years ago, missed last year’s event for the birth of his son, Bennett, whom he held in his arms when he spoke after having become the first winner of the thread of this event since Tom Watson 45 years ago.

“It seemed like I was playing the good golf course. I kept myself in position most of the week,” he said.
“”[Van Rooyen] I played a very good round today and put a lot of pressure on me. On the first nine, I did a good job to answer and kept it at a distance. I played beautiful bullets
“It’s quite special. It’s hard to do for words. I had my first chance of playing a professional event here in 2014 and I am very grateful.
“I learned a lot that week, and I was very inspired to come here and try to make a living in this game. I am lucky to be in this position.”
The victory sees Scheffler find a form before the PGA championship of the Quail Hollow Club, which will be live Sky Sports From May 15 to 18.
“What he does is inspiring,” said Spieth about Scheffler.
“It was really cool if I was me that it was in this last group, and at least we were going a little back and forth a little. It would have been quite fun, just being players in the hometown.
“I was a little lucky over 18 years. I thought I hit it in the water, and I ended up getting Birdie. These are the types of breaks you need to sometimes shoot 62.”
