China is impatient to make a trade agreement with the United States, according to President Donald Trump.
Trump’s remarks came when the secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent is about to launch commercial negotiations with China in Switzerland on Saturday in the middle of a steep price battle between Washington and Beijing.
“Scott will go to Switzerland, meet China,” Trump told journalists on Thursday in the White House. “And you know, they want to do a lot of agreement. We can all play games. Who made the first call, who did not make them? It doesn’t matter. Only, what is happening in this room. But I will tell you that China wants to do a lot. We will see how it works.”
Trump told journalists on Air Force on a Sunday that he wanted a “fair” commercial agreement with China, saying that discussions with Beijing were underway on several questions.
Trump has expressed his support for prices for decades. The White House called for prices to tackle the country’s record trade deficit in 2024 of $ 1.2 billion, and said the prices will bring back American manufacturing jobs.
Bessent warned in April that prices could cost China up to 10 million jobs, and said it was in Beijing to remove current American import prices.
“I think that over time, we will see that the Chinese prices are not durable for China. I have seen a very large number in the last days which show that if these figures remain, the Chinese could lose 10 million jobs very quickly,” said Bessen to the White House on April 29. “And even if there is a drop in prices of which they could lose 5 million jobs.”
“So don’t forget that we are the country of the deficit,” said Bessent. “They sell us almost five times more goods than we sell to them. So there will be survival to remove these prices. They are not durable for them.”
Bessent also told legislators on Tuesday that the United States had launched discussions with various countries and said the main trade agreements could be announced “this week”.
