“I could not be more grateful to the opportunities that were given to me and the support that I received along the way.
“You owe so much to so many people on a trip like this-it is impossible to name everyone, but to everyone, know how grateful I am. I couldn’t have done it without you.
“It’s crazy to think that it all started in the last millennium, when I signed for the Academy in 1999. Since I made my professional debut in 2006, I realize that I had the chance to live the dream that millions of people share.”
‘I owe everything to Southampton’
He continued: “Southampton … the place where it all started, and rightly so where it ends. This is the club I finally owe everything.
“Liverpool … the chance to represent one of the biggest clubs in the world and to win some of the game’s greatest prices.
“Brighton … houses some of the happiest years of my life, in a club deeply connected to its community and run in such a intelligent and modern way.
“And England … Each cap meant the world for me. Representing my country was the greatest honor.
“I am proud of the player career I had and I have no regrets about it all. I kiss all the ups and all the stockings because they shaped me in whom I am.
“To all those who made the trip so special, the staff of each club and organization, managers and coaches, my teammates and of course supporters – thank you.”
