This article contains major spoilers For “invincible”.
If you have read the “invincible” comics and you know the end of the game, you have probably watched season 3 with Dread. Not because the season is bad, far from it. No, because you knew that the end was going to be a bloodbath and that this major character would not do it.
The penultimate episode of season 3-“What did I do?” – Adapts “invincible war”. Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown) promulgates his last vengeful plan against Invincible / Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) by bringing invincibles of different realities to his. To go home, the invincibles must destroy Mark’s land, “our” land.
One of the invincible, and particularly sadistic, attacks the base of the teenage team, the crushing robot, the monster girl and the balls. Thus, Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas) stays behind to fight it and let the others escape. When it seems that everything is finished for Rex, he plunges his hand through an open injury, catches his own skeleton and explodes him, withdrawing himself and the invincible alternative in the explosion.
Rex was compared to Gambit from “X-Men” because they are both arrogant men with the ability to make things happen. (Admittedly, Rex can generate brilliant / explosive stems, while Gambit sticks to playing cards.) Comparisons will now be made to the heartbreaking sacrifice of Gambit in “X-Men ’97”. Like Remy Lebeau, Rex Sprode is a hero who deserves to remember.
RIP Rex Splode, a real invincible hero
In “invincible” comics and television shows, Rex is not supposed to be sympathetic – at the beginning. He is arrogant, abrasive and dating from the atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs, one of the many celebrities of the series). The very presence of Rex is in the process of receipt of Mark and Eve. Then worse, Rex cheat Eve and she throws it. It could have been the end of Rex, but instead, he dragged. Spending more time with Rex allows you to understand why Eve loved it first.
The show bought Rex even more than comics. Part of this dates back to the funny and entertaining performance of Mantzoukas. It travels a fine line between the manufacture of odious Rex, sometimes pathetic and ultimately endearing. The show also gave Rex more time under the spotlight, which means that his absence will feel even more obvious and painful in future “invincible” seasons.
Rex was humiliated in season 2, when he directed some of the globe guards during a mission that turned horribly. He and his teammates are almost dead, which gave Rex the awakening he needed. He was still a loudmouth, but who cared about his friends.
Season 3 paired Rex with the narrowing of Rae (Grey Delisle), which has doubts all over the superhero. A normal life seems good for Rae, but as much as he loves it, the identity of Rex East be a superhero; His war name is his literal and legal name, after all. Looking at the scenes of Rex and Rae together, part of me hoped that the spectacle could remain his hand and let Rex live this time. Alas, it was not supposed to be.
Rex Sprode could not abandon a hero, so of course, he died in one.
“Invincible” is streaming on a primitive video. The final of the season will be presented on March 13, 2025.
