Erling Haaland has backed Manchester City to clear their name in the ongoing legal battle against the Premier League.
City have been charged with 115 alleged breaches of the league’s financial rules, and many believe a guilty verdict could see Pep Guardiola’s side forcibly relegated from England’s top flight.
This does not seem to concern Haaland as the 24-year-old signed one of the biggest contracts in football history to be tied to City until 2034.
Asked if he himself had negotiated a possible exit route if City were relegated at the end of the legal dispute, Haaland simply laughed: “No.”
“I didn’t think about it or anything,” he continued. “I’m convinced that the club knows what it’s doing. And yes, at the end of the day… I really don’t think I should talk about it much.
“I’ve been here two and a half years so, yes, I’m convinced the club knows what it’s doing.”
Haaland’s new contract comes as a blow to Real Madrid and Barcelona, who were plotting to take advantage of the increasingly feasible release clause in his previous deal. When asked if he might still join Madrid or another European giant in the future, Haaland once again found humor in the question.
He replied: “To Madrid? I have just signed a nine and a half year contract with City, what can I say?
“I’m happy not to play for any of those teams, and of my choice. I’m looking forward to many more years in Manchester, and that’s it, really.”
