A recent study found that a picturesque Southeast state has become the most popular place to move in 2024, according to U-Haul.
The moving and storage company recently released its U-Haul Growth Index, which measures the number of customers using U-Haul one-way equipment each year. South Carolina, the 2024 winner, knocked Texas, which had topped the list in recent years, out of first place.
“Growth rankings are configured based on each state’s net gain (or loss) of customers using U-Haul one-way equipment in a calendar year,” the study explains. “The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from more than 2.5 million one-way transactions of U-Haul U-Box® trucks, trailers and moving containers that occur each year.

Although Texas still ranks high, U-Haul noted that the Palmetto State actually dethroned Texas from its top spot last year.
“Texas has ranked first or second among U-Haul growth states each year since 2016,” the company noted. “Florida has ranked fourth or higher every year since 2015.”
“Among all U-Haul movers entering and leaving the Palmetto State in 2024, more than 51.7% were arrivals,” the company added.
In a statement, U-Haul International President JT Taylor said the 2024 interstate transactions “reaffirm customer trends that have been pronounced for some time.”
“Migration to the Southeast and Southwest continues as families evaluate their cost of living, job opportunities, quality of life and other factors that come into play in their move to a new state,” Taylor said. “Out-migration remains prevalent in a number of Northeast, Midwest and West Coast markets, and particularly in California.”
