Jim Parsons, who originated the role of (old) Sheldon Cooper on Chuck Lorre’s hit CBS sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” may be hesitant to reprise the role…but his on-screen wife Mayim Bialik, who played Amy Farrah Fowler, on the show, has a very different take on the idea.
Bialik, who recently starred in NBC’s “Night Court” reboot (a reboot that stars Bialik’s former co-star and on-screen best friend Melissa Rauch, who played Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz in ” The Big Bang Theory”), says Yahoo that she had a great time reuniting with Rauch and would love to bring back “The Big Bang Theory” in some form. “With all due respect to Jim, I think there is a lot of interest and love for these characters and I would be very happy to be able to return to them. [it] in any way,” Bialik told the outlet, keeping Parsons’ less optimistic words in mind. “I think we all really have a lot of respect for the brand as it was and what we we were able to create. I was excited to be able to continue working with Jim and do some “Young Sheldon” stuff. But for me, I understand that specialness and I would love to have the opportunity to see Amy again if it ever came up.”
So what did Parsons has already talked about some kind of “Big Bang Theory” revival and the idea of playing Sheldon Cooper again? Plus, what have the two stars been up to since the sitcom ended in 2019 — and what about a “Young Sheldon” cameo?
What did Jim Parsons say about playing Sheldon Cooper again, and what has he been up to since the series ended?
“The Big Bang Theory” ended after 12 years and seasons largely because Jim Parsons, who was going through major personal and professional changes, decided to leave the show, effectively ending the entire enterprise. Although he appeared in the series finale “Young Sheldon” – where the titular young Sheldon Cooper is played by Iain Armitage – as well as “old” Sheldon, Parsons, who found the whole experience quite bizarre, clearly said he simply thought there was no reason to resurrect “The Big Bang Theory.”
In October 2024, Parsons spoke with Chris Wallace for the Reporter Podcast “Who is talking to Chris Wallace?” which is also broadcast in a filmed format on Max. When Wallace asked if Parsons would consider participating in a reboot or revival of “The Big Bang Theory,” Parsons’ response was unequivocal. “As we sit here now, no, but so do I […] never say never to anything, because life changes so much,” the actor responded, adding that he felt like the series was basically too special to bring back.
“You know, one of the things that was so special was what it was,” Parsons continued. “And they call it lightning in a bottle for a reason,” he added, “and you can be sure it wouldn’t be that. And so why would we do it? I don’t know, it’s is how I feel about it right now. But like I say, God willing, life is very long Yet Parsons cherishes his time on the show “For me, the title is still that it was. the craziest, luckiest blessing I would have never been able to ask,” said the actor.
Since “The Big Bang Theory,” Parsons has starred in projects like Ryan Murphy’s Netflix miniseries “Hollywood,” films like his romantic comedy-drama “Spoiler Alert” and worked on stage in productions of “Mother Play ” and “Our Town”. he’s definitely busy. Still, maybe one day he’ll change his mind about participating in some kind of “Big Bang Theory” revival.
What has Mayim Bialik been up to since playing Amy on The Big Bang Theory?
Mayim Bialik — who once admitted she had trouble watching “The Big Bang Theory” after starring as Amy Farrah Fowler — has definitely stayed busy since her time on the sitcom. After “The Big Bang Theory” ended, Bialik ran his own show, “Call Me Kat,” which was — as it happens — produced by Jim Parsons himself (alongside Bialik); the series aired on Fox from 2021 to 2023 and lasted for three seasons. During the same period, Bialik also served as one of two hosts of “Jeopardy!” with former champion Ken Jennings following the death of longtime host Alex Trebek in 2020. Eventually, however, Bialik moved away after alternating with Jennings for about two years. (The timing was a bit odd, as Bialik opted not to cross the WGA and SAG-AFTRA picket line during the 2023 strikes – leaving Jennings to host all the episodes solo – and she’s not all just didn’t come back after the strikes were over.) Also, I probably don’t need to tell you about this role, but Bialik played Blossom in “Blossom” in the early 1990s.
Either way, it seems like if creator Chuck Lorre and the rest of the “Big Bang Theory” cast want to stage a revival, Bialik is game — and hopefully someone can convince Parsons to come on board also. For now, “The Big Bang Theory” is streaming in its entirety on Max.
