Sony appears to be backtracking on its live services ambitions, at least according to a new report from Bloomberg. The report says PlayStation has now canceled two more live service titles, one from Bend Studio and the other from Bluepoint Games. While there’s no official word on what these games were – neither company had announced a game in development – Jason Schreier of Bloomberg claims that one of the titles was set in the universe of God of War.
The gaming company announced shortly after its acquisition of Bungie that it planned to launch a dozen live-action titles before the end of fiscal 2025. However, this has been fraught with challenges, with turmoil in the behind the scenes from Bungie itself and several major live games that either failed to launch or performed poorly post-launch. The most infamous of these is the Concord of 2024, which was launched and then died within two weeks. While Helldivers 2 proved to be a success, it proved an anomaly in PlayStation’s ambitions.
Sony acquired Bluepoint in 2021, after working with the studio to develop remakes and remasters including Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. A report from IGN around this time, he claimed that Bluepoint’s next title would be an original title. As for Bend, former Days Gone director Jeff Ross (Bend Studio released Days Gone) claimed that Sony had invested 250 million dollars on his next project.
According to the report, Sony has not closed either studio and does not plan to lay off any staff. A memo to staff says the company is “working closely with Bend and Bluepoint to determine what the next projects are and plans to do everything we can to ensure minimal business impact.”
