Aidan Gomez, co-founder and CEO of Generative Ai Startup Cohere, joined the board of directors of the Rivian electric vehicle manufacturer, According to a regulatory file. The appointment is the last sign that Rivian considers the promises to apply AI to his own business while positioning himself as a software leader – and even supplier – within the automotive industry.
Rivian increased the size of the board of directors and elected Gomez, the term of which will expire in 2026, according to the file.
Gomez has had a long career as data scientist and IA expert. He launched Cohere in 2019 with the co-founders Nick Frosst and Ivan Zhang by emphasizing the training of AI foundation models for companies. The AI -generating startup sells its services to companies such as Oracle and concept.
Before starting Cohere, Gomez was a researcher at Google Brain, Google’s in -depth learning division led by the Nobel Prize winner, Geoffrey Hinton. Gomez is also known for “attention is everything you need”.
Gomez’s skills could be particularly useful for Rivian because the electric vehicle manufacturer is sailing in a new joint venture of $ 5.8 billion with Volkswagen Group to develop software. Under the joint venture, Rivian will share its expertise in electrical architecture with the Volkswagen group – including its many brands – and should concede to existing intellectual rights to the joint venture.
The joint venture may sell its technology to other companies in the future.
Rivian has also been working on an AI assistant for its electric vehicles since 2023, Techcrunch, Director of Rivian software, Wassym Benaid, in an interview in March. The works of AI, which is specifically found on the orchestration layer or the frame for an AI assistant, is outside the joint venture with VW, Benaid mentioned at the time.
Gomez’s expertise in AI and as data scientist is clearly attractive to the founder and CEO of Rivian RJ Scarge, who
noted in a press release that “his thought and expertise will support Rivian while we integrate new advanced technologies in our products, services and manufacturing”.
