We are going to take a look at the big boxers who beat the old ones once. So who is better when you consider both a meeting at their peak or due to a controversy?
In October 1951, at Madison Square Garden in New York, Rocky Marciano37-0 (32), arrested the former champion Joe ‘The Brown Bomber’ Louis66-2 (52), in the eighth round. It was only the second time that Louis was arrested.
Behind by entering the eighth round, Louis was overthrown twice. First with a left hook, Marciano dropped Louis to fall for an account of 8 by referee Rudy Goldstein. Then Marciano sent Louis by the strings while the Goldstein referee called a stop without counting.
Subsequently, Marciano started to cry, after stopping his hero, “The Brown Bomber”. Did Marciano beat Louis when the two were at their peak?
Ring Magazine called Jack ‘Galveston Giant’ Johnson The biggest heavyweight champion.
In April 1915, the heavyweight champion Johnson, 53-5-10, was overthrown in the 26th round of a 45:06 ½ round lap, the Jess Pottawatomy giant, Willard, 22-5-2, in Oriental Park, Havana, Cuba.
Johnson was on the canvas on his back with the two arms crossed to keep the sun out of his eyes, giving the impression that he plunged!
Two fights later, Willard lost his title to Jack Dempsey51-5, in Toledo, Ohio. Williard had broken down seven times in the first round. Willard was officially arrested at the end of the third before the towel was thrown before the fourth round. Willard had taken a beat with ribs and the broken jaw, it was reported.
In October 1980, former champion Muhammad `The Greatest ‘Ali, 56-4, left his retirement after a year and was arrested for the only time in Larry’ The Easton Assassin ‘Holmes, 35-0, after ten laps. Ali’s unique training partner gave him a blow to the body. Holmes, sometimes, signaled the referee Richard Green to be called.
The long -standing man of Ali, Dr. Ferdie Pacheco, advised Ali to no longer fight anymore, saying that he would never work his corner if he did it, after Ali re -re -made the title for the third time, beating Leon ‘Spinks by shared decision.
Did Holmes defeat Ali in prime hours before losing his license for three years?
In August 1943, at Madison Square Garden, New York, “ Sugar ” Ray Robinson, 44-1, beat the former champion with 3 Henry ‘Homicide Hank’ Armstrong, 132-17-8, more than 10 laps.
Robinson is considered Pound-For-Pound the greatest boxer of all time, and this writer considers Armstrong as perhaps the second largest. What would have happened if the two were at their peak during their meeting?
In November 1982, at Miami’s Orange Bowl, WBC world champion, Aaron ‘Hawk’ Pryor, 31-0, arrested the world champion with two Alexis “Thin Man” Division Argulo, 72-5, in the fourteenth round.
Arguedello had hurt Pryor at the thirteenth round, in the exhausted air. He was ahead of two of the three cards. Between the rounds, his coach, Panama Lewis, said to his second: “No, I want the black bottle!”
Pryor came out in the fourteenth round as if he had had his “second wind” after drinking in the bottle. After a minute, he had on his feet with a wave of punches, forcing the referee Christudoulou to arrest. What was in the bottle? It looked like the end of the thirteenth round, Pryor seemed to be ready to be stopped in the next round, but came out full of energy. The bottle was never verified by the Commission thereafter. What if he hadn’t received a drink from this bottle?
