The players and staff of Salford Red Devils remained unpaid on Friday, according to head coach Paul Rowley.
The miserable start to the season of Salford saw them to concede 156 points in their first three games after aligning a team of young people during their opening match against St Helens because of the wage ceiling restrictions when a takeover process was underway.
Before their first Super League match this season, last year’s fourth finish in the League announced that an agreement had been agreed with a consortium to buy 100% of the club in an agreement that should erase its current debts.
Rowley had been convinced that they would be paid on Friday, but that did not happen.
If players and staff remain unpaid, the club could be placed again under a financial stability ceiling.
Rowley confirmed to Sky Sports Friday: “We have not yet been paid. We make sure that it is always part of a process where the money comes from abroad, there are fraud checks, etc., etc. The players and the staff, the great-shop staff included, no one has been paid for the moment.
“It is very difficult to put them in words because it is a unique situation. I know that people have been in situations where they were not paid or they had periods of uncertainty in the clubs, but we spent a complete pre-season where it was very calm, we have not really paid attention to attention in the past three weeks.
“But they are human beings, everyone is a human being, they have mortgages to pay, the staff, the players and so it’s distracting and the cat is something other than playing and I just want to start playing. I can’t talk enough about the players.”
On Friday, the RFL held an emergency meeting of its special measures committee and contacted Salford Red Devils to reiterate the special measurement position.
A press release said: “The RFL was in regular contact with the club to understand its last position, after the end of the month – having already requested and received insurance concerning the club’s financial sustainability.
“The Committee will meet again Tuesday to examine the position and if the special measures currently apply to the club should be extended to the reintegration of a club’s financial sustainability ceiling.”
Sky Sports will once again show each match of the Super League live this season – including two games every round live exclusively, with the four remaining games each week shown on Sky Sports +
