The old CTO Openai Mira Murati announced his new startup. Unsurprisingly, he is focused on AI.
Called Thinking machine laboratoriesThe startup, which has come out of stealth today, intends to build tools to “operate AI for [people’s] Unique needs and objectives “and to create AI systems which are” more widely understood, customizable and generally capable “than those currently available.
Murati goes to the thinking machine as CEO. The co-founder of Openai, John Schulman, is the chief scientist of the company, and Barret Zoph, the former head of the chief research of Openai, is the CTO.
In a blog article shared with Techcrunch, Thinking Machine Labs wrote that although the capabilities of the AI have gradually advanced, “key gaps” remain.
“Understanding the scientific community of border AI systems is lagging behind the capacity for rapid progression,” read the blog post. “Knowledge of the training of these systems is concentrated in the main research laboratories, limiting both public discourse on AI and people ‘ability to use AI effectively. And, despite their potential, these systems remain difficult to personalize for their specific needs and values. »»
Thinking Machine Labs plans to focus on creating “multimodal” systems that “work with people in collaboration”, depending on the blog post, and who can “adapt to all human expertise and allow a wider spectrum »of applications.
“”[W]He built models on the border of capacity in fields such as science and programming, ”reads the blog post. “In the end, the most advanced models will unlock the most transformative applications and advantages, such as the activation of new scientific discoveries and engineering breakthroughs.”
AI security will be another basic principle of Thinking Machine Labs work. The company said it was planning to contribute to security by preventing improper use of the models it publishes, by sharing best practices and revenues in the way of creating safety systems with industry and supporting External research on alignment by sharing code, data sets and model specifications.
“We will focus on understanding how our systems create real value in the real world,” wrote Thinking Machine Labs in his blog article. “The most important breakthroughs have often just rethought our objectives, not only to optimize existing measures.”

Murati left Openai last October after six years in the company. At the time, she said that she was walking away to “make her own exploration”.
Murati came to Openai in 2018 as Vice-President of Applied AI and partnerships. After being promoted CTO in 2022, she directed the work of the company on Chatgpt, the text-to-image AI Dall-e and the codex of the system generating code, which propelled the first versions of the assistant Github Copilot programming.
Mirati was briefly interim CEO of Openai after the brutal dismissal of CEO Sam Altman. Altman described it as a close ally.
For months, rumors have stolen researchers from Murati to hire researchers and members of AI staff for an AI company. The Thinking Machine Labs blog lists 29 Openai, AI character and Google Deepmind employees, among other companies.
Thinking Machine Labs actively hires scientists and engineers in automatic learning, as well as a research program manager, depending on the company’s position.
At one point, Murati would have been in talks to lift more than $ 100 million from unnamed venture capital companies. The blog has not confirmed or denies this.
Before Openai, Murati spent three years at Tesla as a senior product manager of Model X, the cross -manufacturer’s crossing SUV, during which Tesla published the first versions of the Autopilote, her assistance software to AI compatible driver. She was also vice-president of product and engineering in Leap Motion, a startup building for the motion sensors for monitoring the hands and fingers for PCs.
Murati joins an increasing list of former Openai leaders launching startups, including competitors such as the safe superintendent of Ilya Sutskever and Anthropic.
