The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, also known as Amtrak, announced on Wednesday a major change in leadership before expressing the desire to work with President Donald Trump and the Secretary of Transport Sean Duffy.
In a statement, Amtrak said that the CEO Stephen Gardner resigns “to make sure that Amtrak continues to enjoy the whole faith and the confidence of this administration.”
“I am so proud of what the Amtrak team has accomplished to provide rail service to passengers to more people and places across the country in the past 16 years, and I thank the board of directors for their confidence and their support,” continued the Gardner declaration. “We did a lot to make Amtrak safer, more modern and a better travel experience for all our customers.
“Since my departure as an Amtrak trainee in the 1990s at the end as CEO, I have been my honor and the privilege of directing this great American company, and I wish Amtrak every success,” he added. “Go to the rails.”

In a separate declaration, the board of directors of Amtrak thanked Gardner for his service and expressed his desire to “rely on his achievements”.

The news came because many Americans speculate on the future of Amtrak in the midst of Trump’s budget cuts and the desire of the Ministry of Government (DOGE) to reduce government waste. In a statement last week, Gardner said that it was happy to see $ 2.42 billion guaranteed to the federal budget for the 2025 fiscal year for Amtrak’s repairs.
“On behalf of the AMTRAK team, which works hard, which makes more than 32 million passengers in the United States each year, we are delighted to see the $ 2.42 billion in funding for financial year 25 allocated to continue the Amtrak services and maintenance work,” Gardner said at the time.

“This annual funding supports the operation of our trains and the maintenance of our tracks, bridges, tunnels and other assets each year. We are impatient to receive this funding as soon as possible so that we can continue to work with the Trump administration and the Congress to serve America and support the economy.”
