A Joby aviation leader what to expect the company’s air taxi service.
The last form of public transport will reflect what it is to order an Uber, but there will be some key differences: the driver will be a driver and the transport method will be an electric vertical takeoff and landing plane (Evtol).
Joby Aviation, in partnership with Delta Air Lines and Uber, has developed electric flying taxis to which the public can possibly access daily, offering an alternative to traditional terrestrial transport. Since 2017, the company has traveled more than 30,000 miles with its prototype of large -scale aircraft, which should start transporting passengers in the near future. The objective is to provide affordable service, with costs comparable to Uber driving.
Joby Products Director Eric Allison told Fox Business that the company could start transporting passengers to Dubai this year, the US operations expected in the coming years, pending the completion of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification process. The company, which successfully carried out an exhibition flight in New York in November 2023, carried out three of the FAU Certification stages in March 2025.

Allison said that the company was building not only the components of the plane, including batteries, computers and carbon fiber structure itself, but that it builds a service that the company can deploy and “put it in consumers’ hands”, according to Allison.

This will be similar to the opening of an application on a phone.
Allison said that users could either request a trip via the Joby application – currently in development – or via the Uber application. At the end of 2020, Joby acquired Uber’s Air Taxi division, Elevate, and Uber increased his investment in Joby from $ 50 million to $ 125 million. Companies have agreed to integrate their services, allowing Joby to draw from the aggregation of Uber demand and offer transparent multimodal trips.

Once users have selected a trip, a car will get them and take them to the nearest takeoff location. When they land, a car will wait for them to drive them to their destination, said Allison.

The Joby software will follow the demand and automatically fill the seats available according to this, by directing the passengers to the nearest take -off and landing points. Finally, the company plans to extend its infrastructure beyond helitors, exploration of sites such as parking garages, parking lots or even construction roofs. This will allow the company to get closer to the destination of a user, which will reduce the need for travel by car.
“In the end, we want to take off and land as close as possible to where you need to be,” said Allison.
Joby’s electric air taxe design, an impact on minimal noise and lack of engine smoke, facilitate the construction of the infrastructure, especially in densely populated areas.
According to Joby, NASA measured the sound of the plane in 2022, which found it recorded only 45.2 decibels at 1,640 feet, which is quieter than a typical conversation.

Although the plane can only fly up to 100 miles on a single load, Allison said that it made him ideal for shorter trips, which, according to him, is “really the meat on the market”.
For example, Allison said that the plane can fly from Manhattan to John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens in just seven minutes. The same car trip takes between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on traffic.

Another key advantage of these electric aircraft is their low operating cost, which makes them more affordable for cyclists. Initially, Allison projects the price by seat to be similar to the cost of Uber Black driving in the United States as the network is developing, he thinks that the price could drop to a Uber X, which makes it accessible to a wider audience.
“We think it’s really feasible, and that’s where many more people can now start to participate,” said Allison.
